To add to what I said above, ivan does have a clever username, which I always consider a mitigating factor. I vote “no” on banishment (unless it involves putting a giant puppet head on him and tying him to a desert-bound horse, because that’s always entertaining).

In fact, my wish for his return is so great, I stalked him for a bit and took multiple pictures, then took surgical instruments to my face to make me look a little like him then set up a mirror next to my computer so I can feel that he’s still with us though I need to keep paper towels on my desk to wipe the mirror and my monitor as they tend to get flecked from my blood-filled coughing spasms.
ivan isn’t a troll, as far as I can tell. However, he is clearly a fool and one of the bigger detriments to the boards. Generally, posters like him leave within a month or so, which is one of the reasons I like the SDMB. He isn’t doing any real damage by himself, but if he were to post elsewhere that’d be just fine. Put me down for A, I suppose.

Maybe someone can do the math’s. I make 9 posts a day; what percentage of the Dope’s daily total would that take up, and what would be the likelihood of any poster encountering me?
I never noticed the difference honestly, I always just assumed they were the same person… Wow. Ignorance fought. In that case, this guy I have no idea about- is he the one who hates and distrusts cops because of his past lifestyle or is that the other Ivn?

I think his general idiocy is sincere. Weak minded people who advocate stupid views often become experienced at evading living up to the consequences of their stupidity and learn various tricks, like going into OH LOL NOT AN IDIOT I WAS TROLLING ALL ALONG mode for example.
In any case, if he’s a troll in that thread, then he’s just a troll always, and I doubt it. I mean - there are lots and lots of credulous idiots out there that act just like Ivan - so why is it more likely that he’s a troll doing some sort of boring parody of them than to just assume that he is one of them?
I mean, you can see from his participation in this GD thread about alien contact that these vague assertions of belief in grand conspiracies and UFOs are his actual beliefs. You can see from this thread his anti-scientific tendencies, specifically stuff like

So he’s one of those “so-called skeptics are the real close minded ones. I know telepathy and aliens and bigfoot are real, so the fact that they won’t accept the truth just means they’re closed-minded psuedo-skeptics! Scientists refuse to acknowledge the truth too because they’re afraid of anything that doesn’t fit their world view!” idiots. There are millions of people that have this stupid belief, so why not believe he is one?

A cursory search turns up Ivan defending 9/11 truthers, anti-vax retards, talking about the US shadow government that killed JFK. I’m sure there’s lots of other stuff but I only spent a few minutes searching.
It seems the only woo he’s right on is religion. This is probably more to rebel against mommy than any critical realization of the merits of it. Ironically he mocks the religious for their lack of critical thinking skills.
There are unfortunately millions and millions of people like him - no need to search any more deeply and think he’s pulling a Kaufman on us or something.
