Simplistic programs for making mashups?

Do you know of any simplistic programs that can be used to create mashups of MP3s? Easy enough for the morons in the old Mac commercials who couldn’t play movies on a PC level of simple. I tried audacity and even using a tutorial, I clearly don’t have the wherewithall to get it to work :frowning:

Anyway, I’m not looking for anything fancy, just the ability to overlay two tracks, turn down the volume on either of them in multiple spots and save the combined tracks as a new MP3.

When boredom strikes my brain likes to create mashups (today it was “Smokers” by the Old 97s vs “This is How it Goes” by Billy Talent) and I’d love to be able to make them real, you know, so other people could hear them too.

Are you using a PC? If so, I’d recommend Sony’s ACID line of software. There’s a free version available, called ACIDXpress that allows you to use up to 10 tracks of audio. You can read more about the software here.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am involved with the software, but since this is a free version I don’t think I’m violating any board rules. You’d certainly be able to accomplish what you’re looking to do without purchasing the more expensive versions.

On the Mac side of things there’s Garageband, but I don’t know much about it, other than it’s an analog to ACID (I work strictly with PC’s).
