It came to my mind this morning that Apu used to have a brother, Sanj(?) that had a kid and helped him run the store. However, as far as I can remember, he hasn’t been seen or mentioned since Apu got married.
Did they pull a chuck cunningham on Sanj or did they explain what happened to him?
Also, in the South Park episode “Spontanous Combustion”, at the end Randy sets out to figure out how to stop Spontanous Combustion and global warming, and imagines him, stan and kyle as part of a muscial montage, alternativly working on science stuff, being chased by a guy in a golden mask and playing a sixties-ish song as part of a band.
I’m pretty sure the golden mask guy is a scooby doo reference but the band thing I’m stumped on. Perhaps Joise and the Pussycats(which I’ve never seen, so I’m guessing)?
Sanje actually had two children. His daughter performs at the school talent show, playing the song MacArthur Park. She also shows up in the episode where Skinner and Krabapple first begin dating “Father, Uncle Apu! The principle was in the closet with a teacher and he had as many arms as Vishnu and they were all very busy!”. Sanje’s young son shows up when Apu has to leave the store. Apu places the toddler on top of the counter and says “I leave the store in your hands.” the kid says “Oh, how I have waited for this day!”. Kerney, Jimbo, and what’s his name (Dolf?) assume that the store is now unguarded and prepare to steal all they can carry. The toddler cocks a double-barreled shotgun, aims and says ‘Go ahead! I dare you!’
The episodes that you’ve seen in syndication on your local channels may be different from the episodes that originally aired on Fox. Typically the local channels want to squeeze in more advertising, so they edit out bits and pieces of each episode.
I liekd Sanjay, and I assume he is still around (if not shown) because the Kwik-E-Mart is open 24 hours a day, and, although Apu does work long hours, even he cannot be there forever, lest he think he is some sort of hummingbird.
It might be a reference to “Fire” by Arthur Brown–from The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. IIRC, Brown wore a golden mask in a TV performance of the song.
Actually, it was the Little Miss Springfield pageant.
Among his other duties, Sanjay has to occasionally make deposit runs to the bank:
Sanjay: If I don’t make it, promise me you won’t sleep with my wife.
Apu: I promise nothing.
Sanjay can also be seen celebrating with Apu after Marge is arrested for shoplifting. The only episode that might create problems with the idea of Apu having a brother is the one where Apu is discovered to be an illegal immigrant (and some of his back story is told), but his brother isn’t even mentioned. Possibly also the one where Apu is fired by the Kwik-E-Mart corporation. Compared to some of the other wild inconsistencies the show has racked up, this seems pretty minor.
