Simpsons 12/05

I thought it was pretty funny. Sure they don’t make Stonecutter episodes anymore but the show still comes up with a few funny bits now and again.

Yeah, that was probably the funniest line in the whole show. And I liked the (deleted?) scene at the end of Jesus, Buddah, and Spongebob all hanging out in Heaven.

I forgive everything for the massive Fox van blaring “We Are the Champions” as it roles into town.

That was the greatest thing they’ve done in years. I’m still snickering about it.

Yeah, that did it for me as well. The fact that “the Simpsons” is able to get away with lampooning their own network gives me a great deal of hope.

I thought this episode was extremely entertaining, and I laughed a lot. And I didn’t find the revelation of there being a previously-unknown high school friend of Marge to be at all jarring. Why should it be?
The two-headed goat was sheer genius. I also loved Lisa’s “Oh, that Moe” line.

You know what I found a bit uncomfortable? Homer’s gone from “easily angered parent” to “beat Bart for the hell of it.” Yeah, it was to comedic effect, but it really didn’t make me (or anyone I know) laugh to see someone like Homer just strangling his son out of boredom.

Otherwise, and I make this as a plea to the writers, stop making Marge episodes. Honestly, she’s not supposed to be such a central character. Homer, yes, Bart, sometimes, Lisa, when you have a message, but Marge is the supporting-character Simpson. She’s not there to handle an episode on her own. Hell, the only good one I can think of is the Country Club one and even that was a stinker among the greats.

Well, I thought it was pretty good. I missed the first 10 minutes so I didn’t see the goat bit, which sounds outstanding, but the rest was funny. Not top 10 funny, or even top 100, but still not bad.

The game of keepaway between the anchors and them showing off for Chloe were great, as was the pity sex scene.

Shiner-B-Gone, Irish strength. Other than that, I didn’t laugh much.

I thought the way the self-referentially played that for laughs was quite funny.

There may be Simpsons characters undeveloped enough that they are not capable of carrying an entire episode. Disco Stu, for instance. Or Luigi. But Marge is NOT one of them.

“Joe! Why won’t you acknowledge our love child?”

“Err, ahh, that is not my baby.”

“Err, ahh, waaaaah.”

Heh heh heh.

is there any other kind?

I agree that Marge episodes just don’t work anymore. She’s normally so bland that when they try and do anything really different with her she just comes off as being out of her mind. I thought the season premier cooking episode suffered the same way.

Marge is a more boring version of Lisa. She is the voice of reason. She’s inherently unfunny and when they try and make her Homer-ish, ‘crazy scheme’ funny it just comes off as creepy.

As a hardcore neo-facist Fox News fan I thought that Funniest. Gag. Ever.

I’m curious what they had in store if Bush had lost. Would they have used a different song or a different sign for the Fox News truck, or both.

What was the song that played when Marge was spraying the Shiner-be-gone? Why do I have a feeling it has something to do with domestic abuse?

don’t know if that is funny or offensive…so confused!

I think you misunderstand Marge. She is the embodiment of the Creepy Housewife.

Deep denial, emotional suppression-- Marge is in many ways possessed of a much more profoundly pathological personality than Homer. Homer is stupid and immature, but in most regards he’s pretty well-adjusted.

Marge isn’t “the voice of reason” – she’s internalized a lot of ideas about idealized wives and mothers to the exclusion of all else, and it’s turned her into a bundle of nerves. She often displays overt pyschosis, and her family is so used to it that they don’t even blink.

Marge is a great character. Yes, she’s often creepy. How could she possibly be “more boring” than Lisa? Lisa is a nearly-perfect kid with the usual juvenile anxiety. Marge is always a hairsbreadth away from snapping.

Incubus – no domestic abuse references – just “Irish strength” soothing. It was the chorus of Tooraloora, from the Bing Crosby picture Going My Way.

Appropriate sentimentality for a woman who’s anxious about a perceived transfer of her daughter’s affections.

The overly political episodes:

  1. The Prisoner parody where free thinkers were punished

  2. The Rush Limbaugh parody

Just to prove I’m not some overly sensitive Republican, I loved the episode where G. Bush senior was the Simpsons neighbor and Bart tormented him, ala Dennis The Menace.

What?!?! That’s the episode where Sideshow Bob gets elected mayor:

Bob: You can’t handle the truth! No truth-handler, you! Bah! I deride your truth-handling abilities!

And you would deprive our alien friends of this? For shame!

Marge actually snapping has been, in fact, the backdrop for several past episodes. She also has a drinking and gambling problem.

Add me to the list of people who thought it was crap. The Simpsons used to be hilarious not because it was loaded with hilarious lines but because they almost never fell flat. Some episodes weren’t a laugh riot beginning to end, but at least they got chuckles from me and I never ended up sitting thinking “WTF was that?”

This episode and a lot of the recent ones don’t accomplish that anymore. 50% or more of the supposedly funny lines just fail. Horribly. I’d rather watch a Simpsons episode with no joke attempts than one like this that leaves me yelling at the screen “OH MY GOD THAT ISN’T FUNNY AT ALL!”

I thought this one wasn’t too bad, for a Marge episode. Better than some recent episodes, anyway. Maybe after three Marge episodes in a row to start this season, something better will happen (but I’m not counting on it). I was looking at the upcoming episode descriptions at http://www.snpp.com and it’s hard to say what might be promising. However, I do know that the one I’m least looking forward to is the likely craptacular Super Bowl episode following the lame “Homer gets a wacky new job and meets 4.2 million different celebrities” story line.

And a gun.

And I heard that the very last episode of The Simpsons is going to be directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Just kidding. But she does have a gun. She retrieved it from the trash can after she made Homer give it up. She put it in her purse, gave a frighteningly evil look as I recall, and the gun has not been seen since.
