No matter how much the writers and fans would want it to happen, Lisa outing herself as a pre-teen lesbian would bring a backlash on Fox so fast, we’d have heard about it five years before it occurred.
Short answer: No. (Long answer: See the play.)
Is that true of lesbians? That when they’re children, they have crushes on girls? (Something I’ve never heard mentioned, one way or the other.)
It is not going to be Lisa, dammit, beyond the fact that having an eight-year-old come out would be farcical. She’s shown her sexuality several times, not only by crushes on handsome older guys but by actually kissing a couple of boys her own age. Remember her dating *Nelson * for an entire episode?
You see, this is what is baffling to me. How does one get to this situation mentally??? Straight kids are generally regarded to have young crushes but gay kids aren’t. Huh? I don’t understand at all what sequence of mental processing leads to such a concept. Not a bash, just a “how does that happen???”
And yes BrainGlutton, gay kids get crushes. They have been IMHO threads where people discuss their early awareness of orientation.
As to Lisa and the Simpsons: a. I pointed out why she isn’t a realistic candidate for the Gay Marriage episode and b. I pointed out 3 of her straight crushes. But I would never assume that Lisa has to be 100% straight. Some people are bi, so Lisa could have a gay crush in the future and the Universe won’t collapse. It wouldn’t be inconsistent writing at all, especially for a show that can’t even get Springfield’s local geography straight. (If you’ll pardon the term.)
I think you’re getting a little bent out of shape for nothing in making a few rather large leaps.
-
You’re assuming that all gay children are aware of their orientation at a age eight.
-
You’re then assuming that this eight year old knows enough about her orientation to get married as a political statement (granted, political statements are Lisa’s specialty).
-
You’re basically poo pooing the backlash a gay eight year old would receive. Sure the Simpsons writers are ballsy in dishing out jabs at self righteous freaks. But I don’t think even they would go there.

Lisa is STRAIGHT. Deal with it. Every character mentioned in this thread has had multiple instance of the “Maybe they’re gay?” joke implied on their behalf. Lisa never has and in fact is one of the few characters to actually label herself as “Heterosexual” on the show (granted again, this was a future dream that can be ignored).
Very good post, Justin_Bailey.
Right. As a “list the gay jokes” thread, this has been fun. It’s a long-running show and has made a phenomenal number of them. Usually, these jokes work because they violate what we know about the character (Smithers being the exception), not because they’re really hints about the person’s sexuality.
I can’t think of any Lisa gay jokes, but during the Spelling Bee episode two years ago, Lisa was offered a scholarship to the ‘Seven Sisters’ college of her choice, and she had a dream sequence that featured women representing each college. There were a few lesbian jokes in there, so you could argue the message to Lisa was ‘come to Smith or Barnard and dyke out.’
Justin_Bailey: Who are you addressing your post to???
(Clearly not me as none of your points either refer to matters discussed in any of my posts or are in fact in agreement with things I have explicitly stated in my posts. Nor do I see any posts made by anyone that come close to the points your raise.)
As a general rule to everybody read any post you get upset about several times before posting. And when you’ve done that, read it again a couple more times.
For example, if someone doesn’t say “all”, that means they didn’t say “all”.
Yeah, pretty much. I can’t speak for everyone, but I would be surprised if some clue hadn’t gathered in the innermost recesses of the brain by the third grade. Put the shoe on the other foot: when did you first realize you liked a member of the opposite sex in a strange, novel way different from your other friendships? I’m betting it was a puppy-love crush at around age 6.

Chefjef suggested Lisa as a candidate. This has been rejected by everyone else as too unlikely.
I and several others speculated that the outed character could be a kid inspired by all the openness Homer’s wedding ceremonies promotes. We also agreed that it’s more likely the outed character will be married by Homer, precluding any kids.
They haven’t so far, true. (Nor, to my knowledge, has South Park. I am surprised.) But there has been some confusion on Family Guy about an even younger child’s orientation, with no backlash.
We know. Many people, including lots of iddle kiddies, are GAY. Deal with that.
I’m guessing this is kosher with the new CS rules, if not my apologies.
I just wanted to point out that tonight’s episode will be the “coming out of the closet one.” I think it’s Patty, as obvious as it is.
I’ll bet it’s either going to be one of two yawner choices, (Smithers or Marge’s sister) or some third tier character like Sideshow Mel.
It’s definitely Patty. She’s going to marry a local female golf pro. Homer will perform the ceremony (he gets ordained online).
I still don’t understand why it is that we keep on hearing people bring out Lisa crushes on boys as proof she isn’t gay. The word bi keeps coming up as a possibility, and though I don’t think it is Lisa, I don’t see why not. I see arguements against the possibility , but none are convincing to me.
On a related note, I believe that diffrent writters create diffrent episodes of “Family Guy” and besides that, they keep changing their mind wether Stuwart is gay or not, based on the “he has to be one or another” mentality, but if a real life person showed these behaviors, he would be called bisexual.
Because he would be.
Heh. The show just began and had a rare disclaimer: “This episode contains discussion of same-sex marriage. Parental discretion is advised.”
The couch scene was also them playing hockey. Guess they have a stock and can choose one that’s appropriate. Glad somebody’s getting to play!
It’s Patty
“Here’s another bomb, I like beer!”
Gasp! I’m enjoying this episode. This season, that’s a huge surprise!
“Don’t you push them, they have to figure that out for themselves.”
hell this was a given if you ask me. Remember the episodes with the floats where her and smithers were in the closet saying
Man: We’re gay, we’re glad!
Woman: But don’t tell Mom and Dad!
And we have a twist!
:smack:
Leslie Robin Swisher?
