I loved the Halloween episode. I thought the part where Goldilocks gets it was hysterical. I know what you mean, though,
But the season premiere fell a little flat for me. There were great moments (Lenny=white, Carl=black) but for the most part it didn’t seem that funny to me. Someone told me that the newer episodes don’t seem that funny at first, but when you watch the reruns you appreciate their brilliance.
What the shitz?!? That is patently untrue. They get worse, my friends. Much worse. Remember the one with the Leader? Kinda funny on first glance, terrible later on. The pattern holds.
The Simpsons have been going downhill since 1996, maybe even 95. They went from having a handful of bad shows, really good shows, and some lame shows with some hilarious lines- to mostly shit episodes with some good parts.
The concept and framework of the show is showing it’s age, methinks. Coupled with a spate of writers who grew up watching the show, you get rehashes and repititions (frinstance, in the Who episode, Homer once again did that “Lisa, honey, da-dee is trying to blah blah blah blah” whilst patting her on the head. How many f*ing times can they do that? Do they think it’s funny? Arrgh…)

God, don’t get me started on the Leader one. The Simpsons join a creepy cult…ha ha.
I wouldn’t agree it was that soon…but I definitely agree with the deterioration. The last great one in my opinion was the 200th. (I have a soft spot for that episode…for some crazy reason.) The garbage squirting up like projectile vomit set the stage for the over the top craziness that would later ensue…

Yeah the Lisa thing has gotta stop. Is it just me or does it feel like Homer is trying to be overly young and cool? (Remember the Florida spring break one…?)
Correction: Five said a glory hole was a sexual term. It may be, but the more mainstream definition of it is a superhot furnace used in glassblowing to heat the glass up again. More useless knowledge.
I agree that the two episodes this year have sucked royally, but of course had some suburb one liners to go along with them. The Halloween one was especially bad, and I have been sick of celebrity guests for the last couple seasons. The Who? They must be getting desperate or something.
Re: Glory Hole
I’d say the popular definition of Glory Hole is a hole in a wall or bathroom stall in a public place where a person sticks his johnson through. Then a man/woman on the other end services it, the thrill presumably being the complete anonymity of the exchange. Seems to be stereotyped as a common outlet for closeted gay men mostly.
That was cute…but all of the Who jokes seemed a bit too…obvious. Nothing really subtle happened. Well, the chloform bit was kind of cool…Tale of Two Cities reference! (since the name of the episode was A Tale of Two Springfields…)
Also Stephen King is guest starring next week! (I love him.) And Amy Tan and John Updike. Along with Drew Barrymore. Oh and Joshua Jackson next week. No I don’t think we have too many guest stars on the Simpsons, do you…?
Just registering my dissatisfaction with the latest Simpson fodder. Except for a few shining moments–usually elliciting mere chuckles, I haven’t seen much in the last TWO seasons of the Simpsons that’s truly funny–not like it used to be–and that includes the Season Premiere and this year’s (and I use the term lightly) Halloween episode. Personally, I think Matt is just trying to see how bad it’ll get before the network cancels it.
Wait, I think I can write a Simpsons’ episode…
Homer says/does something stupid.
(Usually riling townfolk or the law in the process.)
He recruits Bart to participate or sympathize.
He takes a moment patronizes Lisa and/or Marge and maybe insult Flanders or other non-family character.
He does something even dumber trying to fix the problem.
Celebrities show up and talk to him and perform (when musicians).
Miraculous or assinine resolution (lacking or smashing show/character’s continuity) with Homer neither admitting nor taking responsibility for the outcome.
I’d say they should quit while they’re ahead (still good), but its too late for that…
I don’t know about that… I’d think that the sexual reference is probably the better known… by a slight margin. I doubt that most people know EITHER of these references, actually
