Since I Complain A Lot About Bad Sportscasting...

…it’s only fair that I should make some noise when I hear somebody doing a GOOD job.

So, thanks a lot, John Smoltz. You’ve been refreshingly great in playoff coverage. I knew you were a superb pitcher and a smart guy, but that doesn’t always make for a great commentator.

You’ve been as good as most of your colleagues have been awful. You’ve made a lot of sharp observations and a lot of uncannily accurate predictions. Thanks for reminding me that an ex-jock color commentator DOESN’T have to be a complete waste of space, and DOESN’T have to rely on cliches.

I agree with you, astorian. I certainly knew of Smoltz as a player, but he was never on my radar as a commentator before this Tigers/Yankees series. I’ve taken notice at how knowledgeable and entertaining he is as a broadcaster.
mmm

I agree, Smoltz is pretty good. Much better than Ron Darling. I thought Orel Hershiser was pretty good on ESPN, too.

Let me also add that if the Brewers make it to the World Series, we need to get Bob Ueker on Fox. How the hell is Tim McCarver still employed? I’ve never met anyone who likes him.

He was hired as Steve Carlton’s personal commentator, but the network decided the general audience might as well get the benefit of his observations.

However, you won’t have to put up with him for the first two games of the ALCS.
