I wouldn’t go so far as to say it sounds like a fabrication, but it does seem very unlikely and probably false.
Limbaugh may be an idiot but I’m sure that he’s acutely aware of exactly how well whipping out the “dope-fiend” card would be likely to go over as a criticism for those voicing political views that are opposed to his own. Beyond that, if he actually had said it, everyone and their dog would be laughing up their sleeves about it by now.
The closest thing I can find to the situation described in the OP is an anonymous moron posting to alt.fan.rush-limbaugh, dismissing the Vote For Change lineup as a “motley crew of minimally educated drug addicts.”
Maybe something like that could, rumour-fashion, eventually get blown up into a huge hypocrisy on Rush’s part, after being transmitted through a dozen inaccurate retellings. I don’t know.
To be honest, as a good Canadian Socialist, I really resent being put in a position where the Right Thing To Do is to defend a creep like Rush Limbaugh – but since Apos has ignored repeated requests for elaboration on his remarkable charge, there really isn’t any choice.
Here I am, locking elbows with Brutus and Starving Artist, beating my head against a brick wall, crying “Cite?”
Well, let’s see about that, douche bag. Hmm…I go into a thread created to lambaste Diogenes and make three posts defending him. You blunder in, in your usual stupid and out-of-it-way, and lump me in with two anti-Dio posters and proceed to insult us all.
Dio himself comes in and takes up for me, explaining the obvious – and something which even a cursory examination of the thread would have revealed – which was that I had been taking up for him! You post some dumbass comment about not being able to deal with your lawn sprinklers and drag yet another poster into your slag, with nary a word of apology or anything else to me.
I then give you another chance to apologize and try to appear to have some class, but you demur.
Okay, no surprise there! So I’ll leave it up to whichever posters happen along here to say which of us deserves the apology.
No, Kimstu, I think you misunderstood my comment re Spears and Aguillera. The number of people wasn’t the point. It’s just there are so many big stars (and therefore more potential for unfair influence) speaking out for the left, that to say “Hey, your side has Britney Spears!” hardly seems to be a fair counterbalance.
But just for the record, it would be fine with me if all entertainers, left or right, just stuck with their art, whatever it may be, and left politics alone. This won’t happen, of course, but it’s what I would favor.
Well, to be honest, this conservative isn’t all that crazy about Rush himself. He (in my opinion, of course) is smart as hell, very clever and can be quite entertaining. I used to listen to him quite a bit. But his crack about Chelsea Clinton really eroded my respect for him, and I started to gravitate away from him, and now I haven’t listened to him for years.
I’ve also come to realize what some of my opponents on the other side have been saying. Namely, that whether one takes him seriously or not, he is so good at making the other side look alternatively clever, devious and underhanded…or so stupid, lame and air-headed, that it really does breed hatred and intolerance. But I still was glad he was around because he was a mobilizing force to counteract the liberal bias that was so obvious and prevalent up to that time. Now, however, with the success his influence has had in mobilizing and motivating the right to take action, and with the success of Fox helping to obviate media bias elsewhere – the liberal wing has perceived its own threat and begun to try to fight fire with fire.
These things have played a significant role in the extreme polarization that currently exists in this country, with each side virtually hating the other.
(That’s one reason I think this board is a good thing. You can interact with those on the other side and see that they have what they perceive as legitimate reasons for feeling the way they do, and by observing them in non-political forums you can see that they’re really pretty nice, smart, knowledgeable people who are happy to be helpful if they can. I know I’m much less anti-left (on a person-to-person basis, that is :D) than I was before I came here.
So basically I’m not a fan of Rush’s, but I since we’re supposed to be about finghting ignorance here, and since false attribution from the left is just as bad as from the right, I stand with Larry Mudd in asking Apos why there’s been no cite?
