Since when is Gay considered a medium?

Kumquats?

Kumquats?

You straight folks sure are kinky.

Last I checked, San Francisco also had large asian, hispanic, single, and married populations, but they don’t get their own links, even though there are going to be a lot of things going on specifically aimed at them. Why should Gay people get the inside track at focussed link pages? Discrimination against single straight people, that’s what it is.

I really was hoping that the OP was alluding that gays had suddenly acquired the ability to act as mystical mediums. These brave speakers for the dead could help alleve our mortal fears of the great beyond and install in each of us a faith in our individuality and the ability to live a full rich life without fear of taboo or restrictive social mores.

Are you really quite sure gays have no mystical powers? I’m really quite ready for a happy world.

Wait a few weeks, they will…

“Gay events” in the same list as radio, television and movies? Well, yeah, seems sort of incongruous. Would have fit in with, say, women’s events, Hispanic events, etc.

But the greater point I totally see. When I’m visiting a city for business, say, and I want to go out in the evenings, I would indeed look for the gay community’s locale and businesses. If I want to go out two-stepping, I’m not interested in going to a straight c/w club, I’m interested in going to a gay one (as a follow, it’d be kinda tough for me to find a guy to lead me, and few girls [except lesbians] know how to lead). If I want to go out and socialize in a strange city, you betcha I want to go hang out in my community. (In a broader sense, I also want to patronize my community’s businesses, so if there’s a restaurant I want to go to, I’d just as soon go to a gay-owned or at least gay-friendly one as opposed to an indifferent one.) And should I be on the prowl? I’m not looking to pick up chicks, that’s for sure, so darn tootin’ I’m going to go to a gay bar. Bottom line - I want to go somewhere where I can be comfortable, and I’m most comfortable in a gay establishment. (If you need an explanation why, please see MrVisible’s current Pit thread, and if you want to get into a debate about the “self-ghettoization” of the gay community, I think that might be better suited for GD, IMHO.)

If you search on a city you can find out where it’s “Chinatown” is, where the “urban/hip-hop” clubs are, where to get good Mexican food, and so on. Sometimes it’s more obvious than others, so having a “gay” section makes perfect sense.

Esprix

Yup - it’s both shorthand for “gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered/questioning/straight friends” and an all-encompassing phrase for anyone identifying as “not straight.”

Meant quite well. Most every city guide has them, including Fodor’s.

Esprix

Bingo. More accurately, it’s a listing of “gay-owned or gay positive restaurants, bars, radio, etc.”

Probably not. Lots of guides not only include gay sections, but they’ll have sections on where to find the Asian community (“Little Saigon,” “Little Manila,” Chinatown), Hispanic community, etc. I also have black friends who know “urban” is code for “FUBU,” as t’were. A lot of these communities (including the gay community) also have community centers (and churches and other meeting places), a fairly clear indication that they, as a community, exist en masse in that city enough to have their own “section of town” or at least a population and/or business base of size enough to note.

Esprix

They do. At the bottom of the SFGate page is a box with a link to neighborhoods (where they call the Mission “the traditionally Latino quarter,” they list Chinatown and the Castro [“the gay capital of the world”] as their own sections, and North Beach is the “Italian-American neighborhood)” and avisitor’s guide that helps you get around town. Granted, “Gay” gets top billing, but, hey, it’s San Francisco, for heaven’s sake - I think an allowance can be made here…

I hope you’re just kidding. [sarcasm]Isn’t it a shame that the hets get second billing to the gays in a town like San Fran? Listen to how they complain! Uppity breeders, I’ll tell ya - why don’t they just learn their place?[/sarcasm]
