Or both (a la the Vatican)?
Anyone know?
Or both (a la the Vatican)?
Anyone know?
Both.
Dude, it really ain’t that difficult. You go to a search engine and type in ‘Singapore’ and things like this pop up:
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/sn.html
You’re welcome.
Singapore is the capital of Singapore. Here’s a link to the CIA Factbook entry for Singapore.
Oops, yeah, what London_Calling said.
Island too.
It’s a city state. as in a sovereign state.
Singapore is a city, and is the capital of Singapore (the country). Both are on the island of Singapore.
Not to hijack, but my wife and I went there about 6 years ago. Very hot. Very humid. Beer was very expensive. Lots of traffic. (I could go on…)
I love Singapore. One of the most densely populated countries in the world, but lots of gardens and wild areas. Very culturally diverse. Wild temples and festivals. Right on the ocean. Safe and fun to wander around. Best food in the world! In my experience, the beer was free (my dad’s refrigerator was full of Tiger and San Miguel beer).
Just don’t make any graffiti.
Or chew gum. (its illegal because of the mess made when it is discarded)
or pee in an elevator
Bloody spoilsports.

Singapore is a fine city.

Dammit, I LIKE living in a country where it’s legal to pee in the elevators! And where people roam the streets with concealed weapons!
Having lived here now for two and a half years, I must correct you on your spelling. The name is Singabore.
Tiger? Yuuuuuuuck. It actually made wanting Budweiser, and that says a lot.
JillGat, I guess you and I are just on opposite ends of the spectrum…
> One of the most densely populated countries in the world
Paradise for me is being in the middle of the woods without another soul around.
**> but lots of gardens and wild areas. **
I didn’t see many “wild areas.” Seemed overdeveloped to me. Cranes filled the sky.
**> Very culturally diverse. **
Well, I have to admit the Asian women were, uh, quite beautiful. (I have such a weakness for Asian women that I married one…)
**> Safe and fun to wander around. **
Safe? Of course. But at what price? To paraphrase Patrick Henry, I’ll take freedom over safety any day…
**Best food in the world! **
Expensive! I remember one night we went out with my wife’s brother and sister to a Karaoke club. We had two pitchers of beer (if that’s what you want to call Tiger), finger food, etc. The bill came out to over $100 US.
I don’t want to sound as if I think Singapore was Hell On Earth. But I can honestly say that I didn’t find one redeeming quality about the place.
And did I mention no one lives in a house? That everyone works 60+ hours a week? That everyone on the subway looked like zombies due to the 60+ work hours per week? That the government puts every individual under a microscope? (My sister-in-laws’ husband said that you will get a “letter” from the government if you get in trouble with credit card spending. Nice…) That some movies are censored or forbidden?
One word: tyranny.
I have loved S’pore the few times i have gone… I agree tiger sucks… but paying $100 US for 2 pitcher of tiger and finger food… where were you a hotel bar?
I’ve been able to eat (very well i might add) on great food like chili crab and such. And no dinner (even the best dinners i have had) has been over 50 US. In fact the most expensive meal i had had there was steak at Morton’s Steak House and yes for 2 people that came out to about $120 US but overall if you’re paying a lot you’re not going to the right places.
Also i think i like it because i enjoy the culture and the environment. It’s no Hong Kong or NYC but it’s beautiful, there’s a lot to see, and the food is awesome.
Crafter,
Your mistake was in buying beer in Singapore. See that bridge across the causeway? Yep, that one. Cross into the city of Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, and you can get pretty near everything you can in Singapore (plus a few things extra) a lot cheaper.
