Singing the Physical Therapy Blues

I pulled my right quad awhile back and have been in repair for a couple weeks here. I have been seeing a great team of Physical Therapists and it has been painful yet very helpful. I am at about 60% of where I need to be, but the last three days I have seen big improvements. But at a big initial pain cost to me, but well worth it in the big picture kind of way (at least that is what I keep telling myself)

Any Physical Therapist (read:sadists) here? I am just curious as to what mix of personality and mental quirks it must take to do your job! I mean these girls are tough on me, yet I know they are doing what needs to be done. How do you do your job knowing when your patient is in obvious pain, yet you know this is what needs to be done. I just can’t help but think it takes a certain type of mentality to do this type of work, someone with a bit of a sadistic side, but a very human side at the same time. You couldn’t be too soft or your work wouldn’t be effective, yet you have to know where the line is that you shouldn’t cross. So tell me–how do you do it?

I swear if the PT yesterday wasn’t pregnant I would have punched her! She was doing a deep, and I mean a deep muscle massage, trying to get a knot out. I swear she was taking her elbow and just jabbing it deep into my thigh! My wife was there and she said that it was just her forearm and constant pressure. I wouldn’t know I had my eyes closed and was just trying to breath and not cry like a little girl

Went again today and they worked on a muscle that has been sore near my groin, and I am sitting here with a nice bag of ice near my stuff. Keeping it nice and cold and healing it. But I tell you when the PT today was standing above me just pushing down on that muscle with her fingers I was not a happy camper. Normally having a cute chick putting her hands near my stuff is an occasion for smiles on my face–but not today!

I just wanted to thank all you PT’s out there. I think you guys are unsung heroes in the medical field. Thanks for your efforts (you sadistic bastards!)
