I am travelling to India soon and plan to bring some single-malt as a gift to one of my uncles. Good single malts are apparently harder to come by in India.
Anyway, I had planned to simply buy a bottle or two at duty free in Frankfurt airport while I’m in transit. However, my father, who fancies himself something of a Scotch expert, says that the Frankfurt duty free selection is terrible. (I’ve never bothered to check myself.)
So, my question is, should I buy at Frankfurt, or at Newark (our U.S. port of departure), or simply buy at a U.S. liquor store and carry it on board with me?
For clarity:
By “good single malt,” I mean things of the caliber of Oban, Talisker, Macallan, etc. Not Glenlivet, and definitely not Johnnie Walker.
My goal is primarily to travel with this stuff for the least amount of time possible. Secondarily, I want to ensure that I have minimal trouble bringing the stuff into India. I realize duty free is a bit of a scam, but I’ve never tried to bring liquor into India before, so I don’t know if buying into the scam makes it easier or not.
I am flying Lufthansa, so presumably my transit time will be spent in Lufthansa’s international terminal in Frankfurt airport.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
