Yeah, I had some hopes for that, considering the people involved. I was terribly disappointed. I can’t imagine that they can salvage anything from that load.
Yeah; the only reason I watched was that I heard it was from people involved in Arrested Development. I don’t think I cracked a smile, except maybe when they introduced Sue Sezno, whose catchphrase is “No”. (Most of the creativity went into character names.)
Yeah, but considering one of the “hilarious” names they came up with was Miracle Grohe, it gives a barometer for just how bad this was. We were hoping for something fun considering the cast, but I don’t think I’ll even bother with a second episode - it’s painfully bad.
Oh well, we can still watch Portia in Better Off Ted.
Roger Ebert’s First Law of Funny Names: “No names are funny unless used by W.C. Fields or Groucho Marx. Funny names, in general, are a sign of desperation at the screenplay level.” Except in this case, I don’t think the people involved knew enough to be desperate.
I too turned it off after about five minutes. My impression was that the show was created by a bunch of people sitting around saying “Wouldn’t it be funny if…” without anyone there to tell them, “No, actually, it wouldn’t.”
Painfully unfunny is right. It was also painful watching how they were trying to be racy by talking about porn and sex and that all just fell flat as well.
I did chuckle at the “Don’t steroids cause birth defects” joke, but then I immediatley followed that up with "Oh yeah, I’ve heard that one before.
Any reason why Miracle Groh brings her baby into work? Is she supposed to be a nature-loving granola girl or something? Wouldn’t a nature-loving granola girl be breast feeding? Just a stray observation.
The first five minutes were truly godawful. The stupid names, the potty humor, even the animation suggested it was aimed at 12-year-olds. Still, I forced myself to watch the rest of it just for Will Forte, and I did detect a smidgen of potential… but mostly I found myself longing for more (vastly underrated) Clone High.
Agree, just terrible. The “catch phrases” got really old, really quick. Hiding in lockers with gas masks, saying sight gags out loud (God Will Protect Me bumpersticker on window), just dreadful. Even the voice acting was poor.
Was this show from the writers of Arrested Development? AD had many moments of comic genius. Ya, this show was dissappointing, but I really didn’t like any of the other three animations last night either. That first gag about “my tiny nutsack” was just awful. Maybe they are aiming at young teens, whereas AD had both silly and sophisticated humor. I will give it at least one more chance as they have an impressive cast of comic actors.
I was very grateful that Discovery was running the demolition derby episode of Mythbusters because it gave me something to watch instead of FOX last night. I got almost all the way through “Sit Down Shut Up”, but when the “steroids” were revealed as estrogen pills, I changed the channel for good until the Seth McFarlane hour started.
The official credits read, “Based upon the Australian series created by Brendan Reed and Tim McLoughlan. Developed for U.S. television by Mitchell Hurwitz. Written by Mitchell Hurwitz.”
I’m surprised at how “bleh” the show is. Even the self-referential humor, which I usually love, fell flat for me (except for the one character who gets a huge “audience” reaction from his catchphrase, “I need a catchphrase!”) I’m even more surprised by how underwhelming the show is given the talent involved: Mitchell Hurwitz, [del]Bill Oakley and[/del] Josh Weinstein, Rough Draft Studios and the animators of Futurama, [del]Mo Willems[/del] Name Withheld, Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Henry Winkler, Kristen Chenowith…I haven’t seen a more disappointing animated series come from a team with so much potential since Click and Clack As The Wrench Turns.
I could tell from just the previews that this thing was going to SUCK, and boy was I ever right, it doesn’t even deserve a second episode, kill it, kill it now!
My indicators that it was going to suck…
1; it was heavily and I mean heavily promoted by Fox as The Next Big Thing™ (any TV show that is as heavily promoted as this has a high probability of sucking)
2; they were putting an undue amount of emphasis on the “voice talent” they had lined up for this show (any cartoon that brags about/namedrops their voice actors has a high probability of suckitude)
3; they showed a limited number of clips from the cartoon (repeating the same clips over and over did not bode well)
4; the clips they showed were quite unfunny at best, boring at worst (it’s a bad sign when the preview clips did not garner even a smile from me)
5; not a negative in and of itself, but the animation looked cheap and cheesy, I could deal with C&C animation if it had good writing, it’s just a vehicle for the jokes/gags/situations the characters encounter
6; the voice actors in the preview clips sounded like they were phoning in their performance, this is clearly a “just to pay the bills” job for them
