I’ve googled a bit, but wondered if anyone could recommend a site that lists CPU’s and their compatible hard drives, motherboards, RAM, etc.
Somebody just gave me his old K-6 computer (200 MHz), but I’d like to remove his 2-gig HD just in case he ever comes back wanting his old programs and data. And I was hoping to upgrade the venerable old computer to its maximum RAM and biggest HD. Just that I’m not sure what that would be.
It doesn’t matter so much for the CPU, as it does for the motherboard specs. If you can find out which mobo is in the unit, you can almost find archived on the manufacturers website what its specs were and go from there.
More likely than not, is a basic IDE interface. IIRC, any IDE drive should work, but of course the fancy new UltraWide 133 IDE won’t perform as fast as it can if its chocked down to a 33/66 IDE BUS. It should still work though, just get a small one as I don’t think Win95 (which you’re probably running) doesn’t like big drives much.
I’ll be corrected shortly if I am off the mark, I’m sure!
That makes good sense to me, bernse. I was able to find some good info by following your advice. Since my hardware experience is rather limited, I was amazed and delighted to find that googling for the seemingly cryptic number on the motherboard actually netted a positive result.
