Skald the Rhymer is annoying

I think if they’d innocuously titled the show Moral Quandaries they might have got a bit of pushback from viewers.

Groovy. As always, keep telling me the things you think I’ll give a shit about!

I just don’t get this. “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” had a much more graphic rape scene in it than anything that ever appeared in one of Skald’s hypotheticals (I think–based on the ones here, and the few others that I’ve read). The name of the novel and movie don’t anywhere mention rape. Where was the pushback?

That’s true for dozens, if not hundreds, of thrillers. The genre over and over and over and over and over relies on sexual violence to create villainy. If you loathe the entire genre, I get that. If you just think it’s not for you, I get that. But if you single out a single author within the genre and accuse them of being terrible, I’m gonna raise an eyebrow.

There are different approaches. Saying it’s giving you pause? Sure. But linking to a bunch of old threads and falsely claiming they’re all about rape? That’s both blowing it out of proportion and being creepy.

There are some other behaviors in this thread that I find similarly obnoxious. That doesn’t mean that I think everyone who’s grossed out by Skald’s threads is being obnoxious or is wrong to be grossed out, though.

The other kids did it mom, why can’t I?

Yes, I understand. But I find it creepy and I don’t find what others have done unreasonable.

You can certainly see it differently, but that remains how I feel.

Fair enough.

Seriously, LHoD, not to gender stereotype but when a woman says they found something disturbing and gives them pause how can you not realize that’s saying they found it creepy? I’ve always found Skald’s hypos so annoying that I stop reading pretty quick. After reading the recent complaints and some posting history, it’s hard for me not to come down on the creepy side of the argument.

Should I be relieved that a man is here to reassure me that I’m the crazy, creepy one by being unsettled by the endless victimization in the hypotheticals?

no

Helena330 nailed it: the Dope is increasingly a board for old white men and they stick together. It doesn’t occur to them to give a shit about women. Skald is creepy as shit.

How can you not realize that I realize that? This is ridiculous.

Not what I said, of course.

SKald isn’t white and not all women are creeped out by the genre.

Because you compared her comments to one unreasonable “rape” link post and ignored that she was saying exactly what all the other people were saying. Because you’re pretending that the only thing you were arguing against was the rape links post.“hey, I understand that almost every woman in this thread finds him creepy, but I didn’t like that link avalanche” is not where you’ve positioned yourself so far.

you I like

So you only stick around here for the threads old white men are good for? Like tax returns and car maintenance?

what?

I think Ursula Le Guin is rolling in her grave that he pinched her title for a user name.

You’re right. What you said, in a thread that has women saying “this bothers me” was:

So. I see a pattern. I must be crazy, since it’s a bullshit pattern that should embarrass me?

Seems like a weird and somewhat pathetic hobby. A cadre of 5-10 misanthropes “snarking” on random people of a different message board? Well, if that gives you a sense of belonging and purpose I suppose there is some minimal utility.

But you know what you could do if you actually found Skald pervy or distasteful? Ignore him! But that would deprive you of a source of inter board drama. What do you hope to gain with this? You want Skald banned from here? What’s your goal? You folks trolled and baited Clothahump for quite some time. Finally got him banned.

Now, to be clear, I’m not so bothered that I would have started this thread. But in this thread, we have multiple women saying it bothers us. We are called crazy, creepy, and part of the mean girls’ gang. For objecting to what we perceive as a pattern of degradation, violation, and exploitation.

You (generic you) don’t see it. Ok. That’s fine. Just quit deriding us for naming what we’re seeing, ok?
