Around here, spring is coming…about 3 weeks early! On my walk in the woods, I noticed the tops of the skunk cabbage plants poking up-and my neighbor’s forsythia bush is blooming!
No snow on the ground-and the days have been mostly in the low 40’s.
Not good for the skiers, but it looks like an early spring-and the robins are back!
My daffodils came up three weeks ago. We haven’t even had enough frost for the peach trees, which is a problem. Today it will be around 67 at lunchtime.
Mama Plant’s transplanted tulips sent up exploratory leaves in Central Arkansas, USA.
Lots of rain lately.
Since I am a gardener, I’d love it if winter really does come to an early end. I do have some seedlings started already just in case.
Dumb question - we have a bunch of hay bales to try the hay bale potato growing thing - can you also grow tomatoes in hay bales? We have heavy clay where we want to put a small garden and decided doing the bale thing to end up with soil amendment material in a couple summers.
You sure can, aruvqan. I recommend buying some compost and packing/stacking it about a foot high on the bales first. Tomatoes need to root deep so the extra height (and nutrition) is worth it. You need to use compost instead of soil–the bacteria in the compost grows a web and holds the compost on top-the soil would fall off.
I have done this and it works well.
