Skunked dog and a bad smelling house, need answers soon.

The dog just got skunked. He then ran into the house, rubbed himself on my legs and started to roll on the rug before I realized what was up.
The smell in the jeans will be resolved with fire.
The dog was rushed to the shower and with lots of shampoo rubbed in without water then rinse lather and repeating seam to be oudor free. I have been sniffing him up and down so pretty sure, he seams to be happy that the humans have finally got into the whole sniffing each other deeply thing and kindly offered to let me check out his butt.
The house has a bad smell and I don’t want to have to use the same technique planned for the jeans. I have sprayed some of the “pet odor oxidizing” stuff down where he rolled on the rug.

Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Use the peroxide/baking soda/dish soap mixture found here.

You may need multiple applications (I got a box of 'soda and 4 1-liter jars of peroxide and mixed it up one kool-aid pitcher at a time) but it works.

My dog got skunked…possibly only rolled in a spray…and she smelled for weeks before I got it out with this mixture. I tried a LOT of stuff - pre-mixed stuff from the store, vinegar spray, shampoo, shampoo, shampoo, nothing worked.

As for the house I think it dissipated pretty well after I got the dog cleaned. I used spray from the store. Maybe baking-soda-based carpet powder, too.

We had a recent thread about dingy-smelling dogs who swam in a river every day, and I recommended the mixture to the OP and it worked for that too. I think I recommended it another time to another skunked dog OP and it worked for them.

Good luck!

for dogs that haven’t been in the house, tomato juice works wonders.
A shampoo in tomato juice kills the smell ( and won’t hurt the dog if he licks it)
(Ask me how I know this)

Well tried lots of shampoo, and a deskunking shampoo that hasn’t done much other than strip the oils out of the skin on my hands, so now I have itchy hands. Unfortunately the skunk got him on his snout under the eyes ( eyes are ok) so it is tough to really later up without getting it in his eyes.
I have just purchased tomato juice, and a bottle of vodka, if I am going to have that much tomato juice in the house , may as well make bloody marys. Will see how the TJ works.
The house smell is getting better, i guess it will fade, just keeping the windows open and lots of air freshener.

IME, nothing works great. It’ll be months before he’ll be able to get wet without unleashing the smell.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Hopefully he’s learned his lesson.

Acetic acid is what breaks down the odiferous molecules in skunk spray. I spray cheap distilled white vinegar on my foundation walls when the skunks are using my driveway. You can make a nice salad to go with the Bloody Marys.

You can try either the baking soda or the vinegar on the rug, but, obviously, not both.

I never found a way to wash a dog’s face. The skunk smells to a vaguely peppery smell after a while. But do not for one minute think the dog has learned his lesson.

I will strongly second this. My dogs have been sprayed multiple times each and this concoction was completely successful in eliminating the odor. Other remedies that I had tried only masked or reduced the scent.

There was a Mythbusters episode where they also confirmed that the peroxide/baking soda formula was the most effective at treating skunk smells.
