Hmm, I have no problems with purpose-built plane/submarines, but they have some 'splaining to do with the P40…

And what? You’re going to give the flappy-winged planes and the giant snake-armed killbots a pass? Seems to me that with this movie, you just quietly slide your disbelief under your car seat in the parking lot and just enjoy the ride.
Fine with me. It looks like it could be a whole barrelfull of fun.
As a matter of fact, yes.
Giant robots et al are imagined technologies (i.e what people in 1930 thought 1950,70 or 90 would be like), and I have no issues with them.
The P40 is a real airplane that I’m pretty sure does not operate underwater.
Understand the difference?
If they have some sort of retrofitting done in the movie, that is fine by me. Even a throwaway line like “I’ll have your plane modified and then lets go on a hunt underwater” is OK.
For what its worth, I’m looking forward to this movie. I think robots and dirigibles are really cool.

Of course I understand the difference, but the rest of the movie is so far beyond the pale of realism and into the realm of pulp that your nitpick is meaningless. In pulp novels, all kinds of crazy shit happened. If a P-40 dives under water in one of these stories, it wouldn’t surprise me, and it doesn’t really surprise me in this context either.
Is this movie based on…something?
I mean besides the great lips(Giovanni Ribisi)/scary lips(Angelina Jolie) dichotomy.
I think it may just be based on the loose early Atomic Age futuristic pulp mythos. I don’t know if it’s supposed to be a specific adaptation of anything, or just eye-candy.
The World of Tomorrow was the theme of the Worlds Fair in NYC in '38 ('39?).
Anyway much of the inspiration for the stuff comes from that world fair. I personally like the flying aircraft carriers.
(BTW I work for Paramount Pictures but I’m really not trying to promote the film, just answere the questions)
Don’t you get it? That ship they see with the ripped open cage! It’s the Venture! Get it?
The ship that transported King Kong!
When you have a certified Boy Genius as your airplane mechanic, adapting a Warhawk to amphibious service is child’s play.
You know, when I saw that, I knew it had to be something important, but I could not place it.
I didn’t realize that before. I didn’t even really notice the ship.
That is so cool. Now I really want to see this movie
