I made this correction on the post following. Sorry for the typo.
I had my oldest (now 9 1/2) in my bed for two nights when she was an infant (she was sick), and I got no sleep for those two nights. I was terrified that I would roll over on top of her.
Since then none of the 3 girls has slept in our bed. If they were sick (vomiting), I would sleep on their floor to be with them. Sometimes, if the little one can’t fall asleep, she’s allowed to read and fall asleep in our bed, but she gets moved before we go to sleep.
I think that kids need to learn that some things are private. If I want to read in bed, I don’t want to worry about waking up a kid when the light is on. They’ve always been allowed in during thunder storms and hurricanes, but they spend the majority of their sleep time in their own beds!
Sex life:
Some people move themselves. Some people move their kids. Some people have sex quietly with their kids in bed with them. Some people change the timing (during naps). Some people do a little of all of the above, depending on the occation. Some people just face facts that they are married and have kids and their sex life is over for good
Its one of the reasons we took pains to institute the “everyone starts in their own bed” rule. I don’t tend to wake up in the middle of the night looking for nookie (much to my husband’s disappointment, I’m sure) so I don’t care who is in bed with us after midnight.
We co-sleep with not one but TWO babies.
It wasn’t any kind of earth-mother issue or anything, it just sorta happened with littlepoet, and once babypoet came along, we couldn’t just exclude her, could we?!
Both babies started out in their cribs, though…I was too worried about keeping their faces uncovered to keep them in bed next to me, as I’m a blanket-tunneler.
Our typical pattern at the moment is: Littlepoet (he’s nearly 3) goes to bed in “Mommybed” or “Daddybed” (depending on whose blanket he’s using). Later, we go to bed on either side of him. Babypoet (10 months) goes into the crib, which is right next to our bed. Along about 12:30 or so, babypoet decides to come to bed with us too, so by morning, we are four people in a full-sized bed. I get up at 4:30, so the three of them get to spread out a bit more then.
My husband has decided that we all need Seven Dwarves-type names: He is Grouchy, littlepoet is Bouncy, babypoet is Sweetie, and I am torn between Soapy and Patienceofadamnsaint.
Hey Scylla our daughter is 26 months too (born Sept. 30th 1999). I can’t say I see anything wrong with having your little angle sleep with you, although ours has slept in a crib since about 3 months. My big disappointment came when she no longer wanted to fall asleep on my chest and opted to fall asleep herself in her own bed. Sigh… they grow up so fast don’t they?
