Sleepless Domain

Anyone else here read the webcomic of this name?

It’s an urban fantasy, or at least that’s the closest genre I can come up with. If you get confused about which character is which (common in strips where characters have similar looks), I found it helped to reread the strips from the beginning again. Or you can ask me, since I’ve done that.

Anyone have any idea what that yellow bird-like creature is? It just showed up again in the latest strip. It can transform into a cat-like being. It looks like it may be one of the real contestants in the battle over this town, along with the evil girl. Everyone else, including the monsters, are apparently pawns in their fight.

OK, I’m going to try again. I can’t be the only one here who reads this webcomic. Or who would like it if they did read it.

I found the genre: Magic Girls. The background is that the city is totally cut off from the rest of the planet by a magical barrier. The barrier keeps assorted monsters out. But the barrier comes down for 4 hours every night and the monsters come in. There’s an inner barrier at the surface of the buildings that forms when the outer barrier goes down, but given time, the monsters can penetrate that. So the magic girls go out and destroy them.

The strip is posted twice a week, nominally on Tuesday and Thursday, but in reality, a day later. Author’s name is Mary Cagle. She has another webcomic, Kiwi Blitz, which I’ve read some of, but for some reason, don’t care much for.

Below is discussion of the current strip. Those who haven’t read the comic’s archives will not understand. So go read those first.

Anyway, about the current strip (Chap 13 page 12): is that savior Zoe? The color scheme is right, but the body doesn’t make me think of her. On the other hand, we’ve never seen Zoe transformed, so it could easily be her. But then Zoe doesn’t go out at night. Did she finally get up the courage?

This new girl apparently has a thrown missile attack like Rue does. That should make them compatible teammates, at least in terms of fighting styles. So that leaves one of Rue’s objections to teaming up out. Then it’s just a matter of compatibility. Which, considering Rue, will be a much tougher prospect.

It’s a shame no one here likes this strip.

Anyway, found a different forum that discusses it. Looks pretty certain it is Zoe. Note the shape of her cloak clasp and fastener on her pouch. Same as Zoe’s symbol on her eye.

Now we’re waiting to see if she’s alone or has joined a group. Did the Golden One lead her here? And what exactly is that thing she threw at the monster? I suspect it’s more than a simple projectile.

I’ve been reading and loving it for a good while now.

Glad to hear it. Now there’s two of us. Could use a few more for better discussion. Anyone else?

Apparently the main discussion for Sleepless Domain is on Patreon. As I understand it, you have to be a contributor, as in giving the artist money, to read that. Could be wrong about that and maybe it’s just to post. Anyway I don’t read the discussion there, but I found another message board called rpg.net that has a discussion. Not an especially vibrant one though.

So Mac, looks like maybe a teamup between Zoe and Rue. At least that’s what everyone is shipping these days. Team name: Flower Power? Blossom Blast?

I follow Mary Cagle on Twitter and watch her videos on YouTube – even the three-hour ones about bad anime series I’ve never heard of. I kept up with Sleepless Domain for a while until I had to go out of the country for a bit, but I haven’t caught back up yet. I’ll probably do a full archive binge at some point, but it’s in line behind a couple of other comics. (I really liked her Let’s Speak English comics about her experience as a teacher in Japan. Kiwi Blitz, on the other hand, at least started slow enough that I never really got into it.)

Same reactions here, pretty much. I gave Kiwi Blitz about 10 chapters before giving up. I figured that was plenty. And I didn’t even realize that the Team Blitz in SD was made up of characters from Kiwi Blitz.

I came across it somehow a couple of months ago.

I think it is well done, and was promising, but it is taking FOREVER to get anywhere.

Yes, but I’ve learned to be patient about webcomics that tell a continuing story. I don’t know if this is true of all such comics, but it’s a common complaint for both that I follow. The other being Order of the Stick, and that usually updates even less often than SD.

SD postings are at least regular!

Well, usually it’s regular. A few weeks ago she forgot to post one of the two and never made it up. She should have posted one by now this week, so we may have a repeat of that.

OK, a new one is up. Late, but better than not getting one. Now we see if they’re going to team up like everyone is expecting.
