Sliding Door Insert for Pets...

Anyone have experience with choosing/installing a sliding glass (vinyl) door insert for a pet? This model appears to be the right match but wondered if anyone had any tips or pointers.

I’ve had something similar for some time; it’s not the vinyl model that you linked to but a similar idea. It’s been terrific.

I also just recently replaced the old sliding doors with vinyl ones and am still using the old insert. The one thing I noted in the picture on that website is that it looks like the insert is intended to line up with the glass slider and not the screen slider. On mine that would mean leaving the screen open to the width of the insert and if I wanted the glass slider open there’d be a 2" opening between the insert and the screen which would let all the bugs in.

I mounted mine by the screen which unfortunately meant I had to use a couple of screws into the door frame to hold it in place. Without them it tended to fall out when any pressure was put on it.

Speaking as someone who has examined one up close. Looks like an easy break in to me. Just my 2 cents.

Any link to the model/brand you used?

I got it from Home Depot a couple of years ago; I don’t see the exact model on their web site now but they are all very similar from what I’ve seen.

We have used one for several years with excellent results. It might not be that hard to bend it enough to allow a breakin - but, jeez, the whole door’s glass, how hard would it have to be anyway? We’re always worried we’re going to break in accidentally if we forget having closed it the last time through!

I’ve had a similar model for five years now (one came with my old house), and I can say, that I have never owned anything, including my bed, which I love more. Also, every single person who has seen it (if they have a slider), including the carpet cleaner, have decided to get one. My sister loves hers as much as I love mine. I am actually putting a slider in my new house to accommodate one.

Basically I highly recommend it.

A policeman told me that burglars don’t like breaking glass doors: they might get cut.

I know what your talking about it being glass. In my limited experience thieves avoid breaking glass like the plague. Even nieghbors can hear that.
