I haven’t read all the threads in this forum, but from the titles and the few I’ve read, it appears folks are complaining about slowness. I was tolerant of that – I’d just busy myself with something else or watch tv – but for the past month or so, I haven’t been able to get to the message boards at all, oh about 4 times out of 5. I tried sporadically throughout this past week at different times, with no luck, and finally got on this time. Thinking it might be my computer, I even tried it at the office, and still couldn’t get in. I get the home page okay, but when I click on “message boards,” it keeps trying to load but never does. I left it trying last night and came back to it half an hour later and still didn’t get in. Also, after getting to the boards, I can’t get into some of the threads.
So is this due simply to a lot of people being on it at the same time?
Hmmm. Oddly enough, I very seldom have trouble accessing this board. I figured that it was because I usually do it between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM, and that I have a DSL connection, but other posters with just as good setups seem to have problems. Am I doing something right?
I have good luck at my son-in-law’s house…he has cable. I have very very poor luck (except for wee early in the morning eastern time) most of the time at my house with 56k.
I try not to be too dependent on this stuff. :rolleyes:
It’s near impossible for me to access the board from home, which has a 56K connection. At work, which I think has a T1 connection, I do have to wait a little, but it doesn’t time out much.
The only time I have a problem on my 56K connection is in the afternoons between 11-6 CST.
I need to be doing something constructive then anyway so it’s not anything I feel needs complaining about. They are doing the best they can with what they have to work with, for which I am grateful.
I do agree, though, that it somehow seems worse lately. I have cable, and generally I can get on ok, but the past couple of weeks have been next to impossible. Or, as is usually the case, I can zip through ATMB with no problems, then try and load GQ and FUGGEDDABOUTIT - I can sit there all night and it won’t load. So I cancel and try MPSIMS, and can’t get on, although IMHO does show up after a while, except no threads ever load. And this really has just been lately. You have no idea how much my book reading has increased because of it!
And also, it doesn’t load well throughout the workday either, even if I only use Lynx (text-based). My telnet connection times out before any pages load. THAT, friends, is annoying 
mnemosyne, is it those fora specifically that work/don’t work? Or were you just using that as an example of typical behaviour?
It’s those fora, I think, although I tend to always visit them in that order, so its hard to tell. Although lately it does seem to be way more particular. I have even read the BBQ pit in frustration at not being able to read GQ, and it usually takes me until I’ve read ATMB, at least 2 pages of GQ, MPSIMS and IMHO, and usually skimmed over Cafe and/or GD before setting eyes on the Pit.
It seems fine this week, although I haven’t been posting much (damn 10 hour work days and 1 hour commute each way - doesn’t leave me much time to do much else). It really was about a week ago, and for a week or two before that that I had a lot of trouble with the boards. Partially why I haven’t been posting much at all lately (not that anyone noticed, eh? )
That’s been my experience. When the board was simply running slow, I put up with it because I knew the administrators simply didn’t have the resources to improve it, but not being able to get in AT ALL, or to get in and then not be able to access certain forums and threads – too too frustrating…and I’ve stayed away for weeks at a time because of it. I mean, why even try just to get terribly frustrated when you can’t even access a thread to post or to see responses. I was curious as to whether others were experiencing this, and if it was due to a lot of dopers being on at the same time. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason for it. For instance, last night, after getting a notification e-mail that someone had posted to this thread, I clicked on the link in the e-mail and it took me to the thread fairly quickly. As an experiment, I then closed out, and put the URL in, got to the SDMB home page, but couldn’t get to the ATMB. That was less than a minute later. I then tried the same e-mail link, and it didn’t work. I got here tonight through a new e-mail link. I guess there’s no use in complaining about it if the admins can’t do anything about it. Bookmark the individual forums maybe?
