Slow Toasters - Is Mine an Outlier?

I recently bought a lovely looking stainless steel four slice toaster. My, it looked good in my kitchen. Looked industrial, professional. Oh yeah.

But it took forever to toast bread. So I returned it to the store and got a changeover. No questions asked, clearly it was defective. Red faces all around.

I’m appeased. I get the new one home, plug it in and start toasting.

Same thing. Takes what seems to be forever. I timed it this morning. Takes 3 minutes and 7 seconds to toast a satisfying shade of brown. This is white bread we’re talking here. Should frickin’ toast in harsh sunlight.

My previous toaster seemed to pop about 8 seconds before I wanted it to. You know: bread down, butter out, jam out, plate out, knife out, butter ope…toast pops. <contented sigh> Perfect.

This one, I put the bread in, go down the shops for the paper, have a shower, have a shave, vacuum the hallway, and when I check on progress, the damned bread is still only slightly tanned.

So question to you all, please - how long does your toaster take to toast perfectly? I know it’s an impost, but if you can just glance at your clock or watch as the bread goes in, and again as it comes out, it will give me a case to go back to the manufacturer with. Hell I may even start a “not fit for the purpose” law suit!

Thanks in advance.

I thought I had the slowest toaster in the world.

I have one of these that I got on sale (I think I paid about $40 for it - it was a GOOD sale) and I was all happy, thinking I got a great deal. Until I got it home, and realized that it takes FOREVER to toast anything. Yes, the toast is good, nicely browned, seldom burnt, but come on!

If I’m making scrambled eggs, for example, I put the toast in and press the lever down. Then I get the eggs & butter out of the fridge, pull the pan out, put it on the heat. Break the eggs, melt the butter… you know the drill. And if I’m lucky, the toast is done about the same time the eggs are.

Slow Toasters: I herewith claim band name rights.

Most toasters are much slower nowadays - manufacturers in their infinite wisdom don’t want you to burn down your house.

Try buying a commercial toaster. This one might be my next toaster.

My toaster is too fast. It goes from Wonder Bread to carbon in 2 minutes. I think the cheaper the toaster is, the faster they heat up. This makes it hard to control the char on your toast. The slower (and more expensive) the toaster, the slower they cook. This allows you to cook you toast exactly the way you want it.

This is what I would get if money was not an option.

Heh. I have that very same toaster, but branded as a Cuisinart. I’ve never had a complaint about it, especially since someone gave it to us when they got tired of the black and chrome kitchen style. It’s not blazing fast, but cranking the knob to max will at least give you a proper extra-well toasted, half a second away from bursting into flames piece of bread.
