Slum Tourism

Story here. See how the other half lives.

“Could the trend migrate to Australia, with foreigners paying to see the back alleys of Redfern or Alice Springs? ‘It sure could,’ says Jane Crouch, Intrepid Travel’s responsible travel manager, adding that Intrepid offers no such tours of any country. ‘As long as poverty’s been around, there’s been an interest in travellers wanting to get off the beaten track and understand the other’.”

Not quite the same thing, but my sister and her husband are visiting me in Indonesia from the US. We are headed to the beach and then the jungle, but I work for an NGO and I plan on taking them around the tsunami affected zone and show them some of the poorer neighborhoods for a half day. I don’t think they’ve ever really seen third world living conditions before.

Geez, they’re a bit out of touch. Apart from one or two short streets, Redfern is primarily populated by yuppies these days. More and more, you could call it an expensive area whilst maintaining a straight face.
