As some of you you know, I am a member of Toastmasters International (I started my company’s club two years ago, I am currently its President, and I am also currently an Area Governor – which means I have oversight over the 5 clubs in my Area). Toastmasters offers various communication and leadership awards, with set requirements for each, and the first thing every Toastmaster is eligible for is the designation of Competent Toastmaster (CTM): it is awarded after the member completes all 10 speeches in the basic communication manual.
At my club’s meeting yesterday I presented the last speech in my manual, and am now considered to be a CTM. My award request was submitted today, and I’ll be getting my certificate in 7-10 days.
It’s the kind of thing that only matters among other Toastmasters, but it’s a genuine accomplishment and it has resulted in congratulations from several senior managers at work (our CEO is a member, as is one of our Executive VPs). Next up is Competent Leader (CL), which I expect to acheive by the end of the year.
In slightly bigger news, earlier today I met with my supervisor: she is leaving the company at the end of the month, and if things go the way we expect I will become the Director of Technical Communications. I’ll have two people reporting directly to me, with a third person under one of them. My first management position! I’m terrified, but also excited because this could be a huge boost to my career (not to mention my paycheck). Keep your fingers crossed for me!
