Small Business Software

I have a friend who is starting up a small business. I am their unofficial IT guy. He has been asking about software that will help him invoice, keep track of customer data, keep track of jobs, etc. I’m mainly hardware so I have no idea where to start looking.

Anyone out there have a small business? What software do you use?

QuickBooks from Intuit will handle all his financial needs: invoicing, payroll, etc. It may do other stuff too, I’m not sure.

As for keeping track of jobs (I assume you mean jobs as in jobs for customers, not jobs as in employees) and customers, what kind of business is he starting? Retail? Consulting? Landscaping?

I’ll second the recommendation for Quickbooks. We use it in the Taekwondo school and I don’t know how we survived before we got it.

I’d third QuickBooks. My wife uses it for her jewelry business.

She doesn’t have employees, but she does wholesale and retail. She has tons of suppliers (accts. payable) and lots of customers (accts receivable). It’s great for keeping everything straight. She uses it for creating her invoices and all the inventory is automatically updated. She can always pull up charts of how much of each piece is doing, how much profit she makes off each piece, who has paid her, who hasn’t, who she owes, etc. etc.

It’s good software.

The small business is a counter fabrication business. And by jobs I meant the customer jobs. I am looking for some type of production tracking software. I guess I’ll look into Quickbooks for them. Thanks guys.

I use Quickbooks for my Web design/hosting/software business. It’s a good bit of money for both the software and the payroll plugins, and Intuit has a habit of putting your version to bed every 3 years or so and forcing you into an upgrade…

but it’s wonderful. Does everything you need, and more. Does alot more than I need but it’s well worth the cost.
