Smarties - what does it mean to you??

Here in Winnipeg and all over Canada, Smarties are accepted as a flatter version of the M&M, but with more colours too. I have heard a rumor though that in the U.S. smarties are rolls of tarty sugar candies that we call “rockets” up here?? Confirm?

only Smarties have the answer.

Ireland confirming the lovely, lovely chocolate sweets that I will be handing out to the nice kids who call to my door this evening.

The bad kids get chased away with a chainsaw.

Our Smarties are the not-tart-though-not-that-sweet lumps of sugar. They used to have some sodium bicarbonate in them and were handy for settling an upset stomach brought on by GOOD candy.

Yup. Pastel-colored disks (slightly concave on both sides) of pure sugar-high heaven in a flimsy plastic wrapper twisted at both ends that unravels and dumps them all over the floor. Smaller version of SweeTarts and more easily crushed up into cola (when I was a kid).

Mmmmmmmmmmmm.
::going to Walmart right now for a big ol’ bag of Smarties Halloween candy::

You are correct…down here in the US, Smarties are rolls of tart sugar candy.

We call your smarties M&Ms.

There I go being the arrogant Murrcan again, assuming that folks know where I’m posting from.

By “our” I mean “American.” Chicago-area American.

…I just got a bag o’ smarties from my GF’s trip to the Great White North, and I also remember getting them at Halloween when I was a kid and living in Ill. and Ind. but these new smarties seem to have a thicker candy shell w/ less chocolate, making them FAR inferior to M&Ms…but, yes by and large, down here smarties are celo wraped pastel colored sugar wafers similar to sweetarts, tho’ not as good,IMHO…hey, not to Hijack your thread or anything…but what happened to those Canadian Zero bars, you know, that cool tempting Belgian chocolate bars, they were GREAT! now they seem to be unavailable for love or money…what gives?
BTW, you should taste US Zero bars, awful crappy white chocolate covered nouget w/ nuts, simply AWFUL!

It’s funny this should come up today. The American version of Smarties are apparently celebrating their 50th anniversary as I was just shown a roll of them with gold cellophane instead of clear.

Smarties are the pure physical embodiment of Halloween. You are sure to get at least a dozen rolls of these sugar tablet goodies every year.

Now that I am a grown-up, I find them too sugary, but I absolutely loved them as a kid.

Smarties.com!

writefetus - I don’t know about your Zero bars but now I will keep my eyes peeled for you. If I find some I will send 'em to you.

writefetus - one more thing, could that bag have been BULK smarties, if so they are far inferior to real Smarties.

Now I’m craving Smarties (the mini sweet-tart ones, not the chocolate ones). I think I’ll be heading out to Wal-Mart, too.

Random note:

Canadian smarties work really well as a coffee sweetener. Just drop 'em in.

Here’s a little pick-me-up for parents whose kids are flying high on halloween candy and won’t go to bed:

take one roll (american) smarties and crush to a fine powder. cut both ends off an empty Pixie Stix straw.

Sssssssnnorrrrrrrt.

Up, up and away!

Smarties (American version) are next to God. I can’t go through Halloween without them. In fact, I am letting some slowly disolve in my mouth as I write this. Yummmmm!

I think of the Canadian version, only because I lived close enough to Windsor to be addicted to them.

I despise the American Smarties…gaack!

Smarties and candy corn are the two greatest candies ever invented. I buy them for giving away on Halloween but usually end up keeping most of them for myself. Sugar, sugar, must have refined sugar…

Nitpicky little thingie…

No you don’t.

Smarties are flatter, with a bigger diameter, with a thinner candy shell which cracks quite a bit easier.

Mmmmmmmm…Smarties…

I love the sugary Smarties. They are my favorite candy. I buy big bags of them and eat them until I am sick on my stomach.

I find something strange though. There seems to be a difference between “American” and “Canadian” Smarties. But, what we are calling “American” Smarties are made in Canada. I have a roll (or ten) on my desk right now. The wraper says “Smarties candy Made in Canada”.

That just seems odd to me. But, I hope that Canada keeps sending us the good Smarties!

FINE, Tengu. See if I share any of my Halloween candy with YOU!
