Smartphone users: how much data do you use?

So far the only time I’ve gone near or over the 2G figure mentioned in the new Verizon plan was when we were doing a long driving trip, and had the phone in nav mode for numerous hours each day. Otherwise, we’re not data-hungry - I rarely go over 500 meg and never over a gig. We don’t watch videos very often, nor do we stream music.

Of course, this didn’t stop me from pushing Typo Knig to get his smartphone before the cutoff!

I don’t think I’ve ever used 1Gb. Usually 300-600Mb. I have a 2Gb plan from AT&T.

I have a 5gb plan and I rarely exceed 1GB. I tether my ipad through my phone too so that’s usage on both devices. Most of the data transfer is mail as I rarely surf on the iPad and almost never on the phone.

No idea. Don’t know what my plan limit is but will never get near it. I am rarely so far from a PC that I need to put up with using my “smart” phone for more than an emergency.

I generally only use about 500 MB a month, but that’s only because 3G is slow enough that I can’t easily stream or download large files. I like to play Netflix and Youtube videos on my smartphone, but I tend to only do that where I have wi-fi access. I’m a little concerned about what’ll happen when I get a 4G-capable phone.

I try to do all my data intensive stuff when I am on a Wifi network. I usually end up using a little less than 2GB a month, well below my cap.

This month I used 242 out of a possible 500. I don’t think I’ve ever topped 300.

(I had to update my phone in order to check, so thanks for making me proactive, lol!)

I got my new iphone right before christmas. I have apparently used 2.5 GB in just over 6 months. Thank og I have that unlimited plan.

I think the most I have used in one month is about 7GB, and I use mine for web, radio, some TV…and I have the 4G so-called “unlimited” plan from T-Mobile, which so far, does seem to be unlimited, at least for me.

On the low side; 1-2 GB
Average; 3-5 GB
Highest ever data use; 8 GB (that’s when I discovered the Netflix app…)

I’m using a 16GB iPhone 4 on AT&T, and have the “grandfathered” Unlimited Data plan

Generally under 1GB; usually in the neighborhood of 400-700MB, although I have gone over 1GB in a month before. I’m working at home these days, so I don’t need to stream as much to my phone as I might if I weren’t.

I have the grandfathered unlimited AT&T data plan and an iPhone 4. Once I was talking to customer service for another matter, and she noticed my average data usage. She tried to convince me to go to one of the non-unlimited plans, telling me, correctly, that it would save me money. When I turned it down, she asked me why. I told her, I’m hanging on to the unlimited plan for probably the same reason they’re trying to convince me to lose it… I’m not thinking of my current data usage; I’m thinking about my future data usage. As we stream more and more video and other data to our smartphones, our data usage is going to skyrocket. I’m willing to pay a little more now to hang on to it for that day in the not-too-far-off future. As long as they don’t just kick us grandfathered people off en masse at some point, it will save me money in the long run.

The only month I exceeded 300 mg was when I tethered it to my computer for a weekend. If it weren’t so hard to type on I’d probably have higher usage.

200-300mb. I’ve currently got a plan with 200mb allowance, so I’m trying to avoid going over that.

I use just over 1GB per month. i have the unlimited plan on Verizon and serf the web daily.
I really hate the fact that they want to make me pay for my texting though.

I have no idea. I also have no idea how I’d go about finding out. My phone contract is up in December and I plan to switch providers. It’d be good to know how much I’ve been using, so I know what sort of plan to go with.

Who are you with? Most of the larger providers (virgin, optus, T and vodafone) have online trackers where you can get an idea of your usage to date in the current month.

Optus. Thanks, I’ll go and have a look.

I’m moving to Telstra because of Optus’ poor coverage. Everyone tells me not to because Telstra is more expensive but I’d rather pay more for a service I can actually use than less for a ‘service’ which is non-existent most of the time.

They’re as bad as each other, truth be told. I’m with Virgin who were taken over by Optus a couple of years ago. I’ve never had any service issues, but then I don’t travel anywhere outside the greater Adelaide area anyway, so there’s no big deals.

T are a bunch of ripoff merchants, and they claim they’ve got better coverage than Optus but the only place I’ve really found it to be true is outside the major metro areas, when you’re getting out in the middle of fucking woop-woop like Woomera or Hay or somewhere like that.

You might have to register for online services to be able to check your data usage. When I worked for O they didn’t enable it by default for mobile plans, but that was about 4 years ago now, so things may have changed.

I have an unlimited plan, but I don’t know how much I use. That said, I use a LOT. I stream Sirius Radio a lot, and am constantly on the Dope and various Scrabble-type games.

ETA : I’ve apparently used 1.156 GB in about 2 1/2 weeks.

My plan gives me 200 Mb. Since I got the phone, I’ve only gone over my allotment twice, and both times I was on vacation. I am careful about not using streaming applications (e.g. Pandora, Netflix) unless I’m on wifi, and around here there’s pretty good wifi availability.
