This thread, reminded me of a story and a possible UL I’ve read somewhere. The story went along the lines of a celebrity (I’ve long forgotten which one) and his wife “joining the mile high club” - or perhaps renewing their membership - and having the smoke alarm going off. Neither was smoking, and it’s doubtful that their lovemaking was intense enough to cause any. The article went on to say that unbeknownst to the couple, flight attendants have the ability to set off the smoke detectors, remotely, at will. It was intimated that this was to coitus interruptus mile high club members, but it seems like a lot of trouble for a relatively minor problem. So, mile high dopers, any idea of the flight attendants can do this? And if so, do they do it often (this may be useful knowledge someday)?
Doubt it. It would likely be a gross violation of federal fire safety standards to allow someone to set off a smoke detector at will.
I was on a flight to Sydney on Qantas.
As we were approaching our destination, the captain started talking on the intercom with the standard “welcome to Sydney” type speech. At the end of this he added, “we wish to congratulate the two newest members of the mile high club”. Somebody on that flight must have been embarrased!
My neighbor is a flight attendant with NWA.
She said they while they have access to the detectors, the access has more to do with turning them off then turn them on.
Her exact words to your question: “Why would we want to do that (Turn it on)? We could just knock on the door or open it up if we wanted to. I don’t think turning it (The alarm) on would be a good idea. You’d scare the passengers.”

Thanks Cnote, that’s more or less what I was thinking, along with what Friedo said. But, hey, this article was in print, which means it had to be true.
