smoking and singing

smokers tend to develope a bit of a ruff voice after a while, and i’m wondering if you stop smoking will your voice go back to normal? i stopped about 3 months ago and notice a difference.

I can’t give a definitive medical opinion, but it seems reasonable that the short term effects of smoking on the voice, such as congestion, thickening of mucosal secretions, and swelling/edema of the larynx itself probably do subside fairly quickly after you stop smoking since the immediate source of irritation is gone. All of those things can cause vocal changes and problems, including roughness and hoarseness.

But I think that any permanent damage is likely to be just that - permanent, just as it is with the lungs.
