A buddy of mine just sent me a link to this website he had just found: SMS free text messaging service He said he has texted a few people and everything seems to work fine. I’ve read the license agreement, but it’s a little too shady for me to entirely trust. Does anybody in here have any experience with this company? Will I just get roped into paying more money if I use their “Free” service?
Free? One thing that bugs me is that every, single time I cross into Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, I have to pay an extra $0.20 beyond the bridge toll. Why? Because they send mine and my wife’s cell phones a stupid, “Welcome to Ontario” message that cost $0.10 a piece.
So, be sure you send your “free” messages to subscribers! Just some grandfatherly advice.
As Balthisar says you will probably not end up getting gouged for money but the people on the other end might.
These services always worry me more as I’m convinced it’s a way to harvest a bunch of valid numbers which are then sold to SMS spam companies. Or worse, scammers.
I’d be fairly narked if I found out someone had given my mobile number out to a shady web service – I generally don’t give my mobile number out to web sites on the basis that they don’t need to know. That’s why I have e-mail.
Most of the US cell phone providers offer free text messaging right on their home pages. The ability is built into some IM clients as well, like ICQ and AIM. Nothing shady about it unless the receiver can’t get free incoming text messages (as others have mentioned).
As for that particular company… not sure, but why use them when you can go directly to the providers?
