So, I just got a cell phone w/ free incoming text messages...

Are there any worthwhile, free sites that will text you info either on demand, or daily/weekly?

I used to love www.hz.com when I had a two-way pager, it sent me info upon request, and it cost me nothing. I’m sure there’s at least one cool site that does similar things out there, so where can I find it?

If it matters, I’m interested in things like news, weather, sports scores, movie times, and local UFO sightings.

Free, reliable, and of good quality, maybe I might as well ask for free cable. It’s worth a try though.

I still can’t get how they can charge you for incoming text messages over on that side of the pond.

It just seems so…

wrong.

“So, I just got a cell phone w/ free incoming text messages…”

The w/ means with.

So, no sites anyone?

Sorry, no sites, only a continued hijack. garius’ comment was prompted by the inference that plans exist where the subscriber doesn’t get free incoming TMs. We really do get a raw deal over here. A fella from Germany recently expressed shock and horror that all the contracts over here charged for incoming calls. “That’s crazy!”

I think he got that, but was expressing disdain at the concept that you could be charged for incoming messages.

I agree with the sentiment. I’ve lived in the US all my life, and have had a cellphone for 6 years now. Never once did I have a service that charged me for incoming text messages, and that’s by choice. It just doesn’t make sense to me (as a consumer-- I can see how it fills the company’s pockets) to charge people for incoming text messages.

I get Reuters breaking news and durring the season, Cubs scores.

Also, my county has this . I get weather alert info and when streets are closed (either due to like a watermain break or accident). See if your local govt has something similar.

Thanks, I’ll try googling for “mobile services” and the like. Good link.

No luck there, my Vox 8610 was not listed. I did find out though, that I can also recieve emails of <161 characters in text message form. So, this allows other sites that send brief emails as updates. I’m sure that there are sites that send these, I just don’t know 'em.

I’d also appreciate Google tips on finding such a service, since apparently I’m inept.

Free, brief, emails on demand are out there, I just haven’t found them yet.

Thanks in advance.

I use a great service that will text you the address of the nearest good pub to your current location, but i doubt thats much use to you!

Yup. That’s what i meant.
