Snacking while driving

During my longer commutes I sometimes like to snack on something while driving.

As for the type of food, I have these requirements:

  1. It should be nutritious. (Or pretend to be. ).
  2. Does not require a utensil of any kind (strictly fingers).
  3. Requires right hand only (left hand stays on steering wheel).
  4. Is not messy.

The best food I’ve found that meets all of the above requirements is grapes.

Do you snack while driving? What type of food?

Nuts.
Small pakoras.
Small samosas.
Falafel.
Segmented citrus fruits.

ETA. Sometimes I take a bag or tray of a “cluster” type muesli if I have any on hand. I generally don’t.

Bananas
Crackers

I like to make peanut butter cracker sandwiches. Or cheese cracker sandwiches. With whole wheat crackers. They are both filling. Also, I love watermelon so I will cut some up, and bag it. Watermelon is good for you, and delicious.

Back when I used to drive across the country to visit relatives, I ate corn nuts to stay awake. Nobody can doze off while chewing on those things. I never eat while driving now, as I consider it to be dangerous as both a distraction and a choking hazard.

Of course falling asleep while driving is also dangerous :stuck_out_tongue:

Apples.

On long driving trips my sons and I must have jerky! And it must be a local brand (no commercial stuff) purchased from a gas stop in the middle of nowhere.

My son and I got a good chuckle from the last batch of jerky we bought. I can’t remember the name of the jerky but it came with a tooth pick.

Only one though. Not good when you have three people eating from the bag.

I used to just push the limits, like a lot of people do. I know there were long stretches in North Dakota that I don’t remember traversing. Now I either pull over or stop at rest areas frequently.

My Wife and I do a long drive about once a year it seems. My go to is beef jerky. Not sure how nutritious it is, but your hands stay clean and it keeps me happy.

My go to food for long drives are carrots.

Candy corn. It must be nutritious because it has corn in the name.

For long distance driving, I take;

Plums
Cherries if in season, Rainiers for the one month they’re available.
Blueberries
Dark Chocolate
Chips - black bean or some other fancy kind, usually two kinds
Turkey jerky
Beef jerky

Can pretty much make a decent meal of it and not stop for fast food.

If you choke while driving, just ran head-on into an embankment. The airbag will provide the Heimlich maneuver

Drinking a lot of water is also a useful technique to staying wide awake. You can’t sleep with a full bladder, and must pull over and rest.

I am rarely in the car long enough to need to snack while driving, but if I am, it’s usually almonds. I always have water in the car with me. When we go on long driving trips we try to make sure we get out of the car to eat so we stretch our legs. Even so, on trips like that we have all manner of snacks with us.

Yeah “teeth breakers”- you’re right- the extreme pain of having a tooth break while driving will keep you awake!:stuck_out_tongue:

I say Whole Wheat Cheezits. They have cheese, some whole grain, some fiber, are addictively tasty and arent messy.

Cheese curds do it for me.

So I take shucking and eating raw oysters on those long solo night drives is a no go?

Yeah, and dressing a wild boar and tending a BBQ grill is out, too. Damn.
