I have no dog in this fight, but: nicely done.
I didn’t know this Elmore guy before and only had a vague notion who and what Huey Freeman was, so I gather there are lots of cliquish minifeuds going on made up of self-isolating and self-contained circles of jerks.
snfaulkner? I thought that was Shodan or Miller, or maybe Guin?
Fucked if I know.
Such a mild, quiet & nice pitting. Why can’t they all be this way? It somehow makes happy.:):):)
snfaulkner, well handled overall. Know thyself. It’s the most challenging subject for most people.
Enjoy,
Steven
This is more than ten words.

Shodan

I have to say that based on the post cited as the instigation for this thread, the OP has set the bar for motherfucking-assholehood pretty low.
But then I would say that, as I’m probably a motherfucking asshole too by that reckoning.
I sort of / kind of agreed with most of Banquet Bear’s post, but I’m sympathetic to the notion that it was far longer than necessary. A concise bit of pushback on that front isn’t a whole lot to get angry over. “Screed” isn’t even the most hurtful insult I’ve seen today … maybe even the past few hours.
This makes snfaulkner so poopyheaded.
Would you prefer “jeremiad?” Not because it’s necessarily a better word, but it’s been on my mind lately.
The problem, as I see it, is too many feuds with all the same eager participants, making the Dope look like it has only a dozen members who all hate each other. Not a welcoming atmosphere.
Could just be cabin fever.
Or sundowning.
About that “screed” thing, the term was bounced around a lot in the OP until the following was said:
This implies that “is really long” is a defining attribute of screeds. M-W agrees; its first definition of the term is “a lengthy discourse”. Only when you get to its third definition do you run into anything like a negative implication other than length: “a ranting piece of writing”.
So he used a term that was already very much in play in the thread to describe the OP that, based on the attribute of the word that the OP focused on, exactly describes the OP.
The bastard!
Why can’t it be both, like me?
I’m a big fan of the word “wharrgarbl” but BB’s post wasn’t incoherent enough to qualify as such.
I get that white people aren’t interested in how people of color try to function daily in a world in which they’re considered “underclass” but a little effort might help.
People want to know why I defended Huey and this is why: the beginning of the end for Huey began with comments in response to a feud with Shodan. Huey was responding to Shodan, who frequently engages in the same kind of sarcastic, smug dismissal of issues that pertain to race, prejudice, equality, etc (like the use of the n-word, for instance).
Taken out of context, sure, Huey’s comments about Shodan’s “imported” child were reprehensible and racially loaded - I don’t dispute that and never actually did. But part of that context, and part of understanding Huey’s perspective is understanding that a) Huey is an angry black man, who lives in a society that is perpetually hostile to black people, and b) Shodan, who may actually be a decent person in real life, has an online persona that is smug and dismissive towards the problems that people of color deal with.
And so is snfaulkner, and I dare say that this fits the bill for some other posters on this board. Some might not even be aware of their own biases or how offensive they are. Understanding prejudice requires awareness, and awareness requires…an effort to understand.
His post may have been long, but it wasn’t remotely incoherent.
I will say it frustrates me that length is considered a negative even here. I remember when we mocked the “tl;dr” culture.
I mean, we’re expected to read entire long threads before we post here. There have been several threads longer than that first post, but you will get mocked if you repeat something someone else said.
It’s not a matter of misunderstanding prejudice. snfaulkner just said tl;dr in a different way. Whites aren’t the only race that can be suffocatingly boring.
I know - I just like the word “wharrgarbl”. I’m not sure “jeremiad” applied in that case either. “Screed”, however…
I’d prefer that “tl;dr” responses in ATMB meet insta-banning, but then I’m not a mod, so here we are. My problem isn’t with the word “screed”, it’s with the nature of the response. If you do feel it’s long-winded, shut the fuck up and move on to the next post. Or PM the OP if you’re so short of brain that 8th-grade level reading hurts.
