Guys, this was my fault. As you may know, Duderdude2 and Silver Fire actually type-sync their posts, while actually I play the tape of the posts that I had prepared for them beforehand. I was in a hurry last night to prepare the tape of their posts since I had to create them between the end of the show and the time they wanted to post them, and I screwed up the spelling in them. I’ve been fired and they’ve hired somebody else who won’t make so many mistakes in type-syncing.

I haven’t watched SNL for a few seasons but I watched last night because Jude Law was hosting. I’ve never heard of Ashlee Simpson. Is she Jessica Simpson’s sister?

Not to hijack, but does anyone else think Jude Law has a perfectly fine singing voice? His opening number was fun. He did a good job with his skits too. Loved him as Paris Hilton’s sister, and the Jane Eyre skit was cute.

I liked the “Air Commander and the Day After Yesterday” sketch (note: I LIKED Sky Captain).

Jude law: I don’t understant why I would bite at the ball of flame…

director: What are you doing?
woman: I’m deflecting the bullets off my bracelets like Wonder Woman
director: Excelent suggestion
later
woman: I think I should take off my shirt here
director: Once again, excelent suggestion

director: Ok, the monser is a giant ape - now its a tiny robot

Personally, I don’t think one has to able to perform live to be a legitimate musician. Tho I’m not ness. claiming AS is a legitimate musician…

Brian

Okay, we just watched this, and I’m confused. If the BAND played the wrong song like she said, then why the hell was her voice coming out of the speaker?

I think what threw me for a loop was that when the band continued playing, they WERE playing the first song. But my husband thinks that the drum beat and the bass line of the two songs are similar, so when there was that small disconnect at the beginning, the band just picked up the original song.

Ugh. Someone’s getting fired at SNL this week. I do have a friend who works there, so I’ll see if I can get her version of what happened. Either way, whether the band played the wrong song or the tape was wrong, Ashlee still comes out as a dumbass. I don’t care how old she is, if she’s old enough to be performing in public as a professional musician, lip-synching shouldn’t be a part of the formula.

Ava

No, you aren’t.

I just wanted to point out the the Robert Smeigel cartoons on the show aren’t live anymore. They found it to be too hard on the animators.

I think that’s a reply to my “all live or nothing” comment. Let’s not be snarkish. I understand the animated bits can’t be live, but I’d like one good damn reason why the musical acts CAN’T be, smart guy.

Besides, the animated and pre-filmed bits are there to give the actors respite and time to set up for another skit.

Actually, I think it’s just a requisite Simpsons reference. In this case, from the episode where Homer became the voice of Poochie. The lady who did the voices for Itchy & Scratchy says this to Homer who asked whether or not the cartoon was broadcast live.

She’s not a professional, nor is she is musician. She is a product like her sister.

Lip synching is pretty common place nowadays even at concerts, especially among the bubblegum teenage products like Ashlee Simpson. The performers are basically “cast” for their looks, lots of magic tricks are done in the studio and all live performances are faked. I think they use just enough of the real voice in studio to avoid legal fraud but these people are not real singers, they are eye candy and maybe they acn dance a liitle. Ashlee Simpson would not make it past the initial audition on American Idol.

She;s not the first to lip sync on SNL, either. I remember an episode where Kid Rock was performing (live) and started ripping Britney Spears for lip syncing the week before.

A lot of the music industry has turned into a visual medium. It’s about videos and looks and image, not about musical performance. A lot of really good singers don’t get breaks any more because they’re not hot. Somebody like Roy Orbison or Randy Bachman couldn’t get a break today.

I forgot to say I agree that balming the band was a totally twat move by Simpson.

Chapstick? Was there Chapstick?

Agreed. She’d be good on this year’s Apprentice.

I absolutely hope this ends her career, there are too many decent musicians who get to where they are by playing live and facing screw ups and broken guitar strings and drumsets falling over and crappy sound systems in dive bars for me to have even a lick of pity on a girl who has had everything handed to her on a platinum platter.

The fact that she blamed her band just makes her twice as classless.

Janis Joplin could sing circles around all these little poptarts…and she could do it in any venue, a cappela and drunk off her ass.

Do NOT click on that first link. I’ve emailed a mod… someone must have changed the file. I downloaded it, and it was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen in my life. I don’t know about the second one. Mods, if you see this before you get my email, please delete this link.

A-Fucking-Men. Best post ever.

My criteria if you even want to be considered an ARTIST you should be able to do at least one of the following:

  1. Write songs (she writes none of her own songs)
  2. Produce/arrange songs (she wouldn’t have a clue)
  3. Play an instrument (nope)
  4. Sing (not unless it’s in a studio, processed, reprocessed, and processed again)
  5. Dance (her moves are reminisent of Elaine on Seinfeld)

She has none of these. As others have noted, she’s a product that proves you can take a talentless teen and with the right writers, producers, band, studio make them into a pop idol.

God, I wish I’d read this before I clicked the link!

She said something about how she didn’t know what to do so she did a “hoedown,” a reference to country dancing.

I clicked on it, but nothing happens. It tells me Real Player (bleh!) needs to get an update, but is unable to do so.

What is it?
