I don’t think you are actually reading my post. I actually do enjoy SNL. I’ve watched it for the better part of four decades, most shows. But that doesn’t mean that it brings a lot of funny. Sometimes it does. But the examples people have brought are one bit from an era that was funny the first time, and then repeated. “I’m Gumby damnit” was funny the first time. Not really after that. Three funny bits in a 90 minute show, and I’m happy, but that isn’t good comedy. 2.5 men has me laughing pretty much the whole show.
I’m going to go against the consensus here and confess that not only can I not stand WUWT, the entire appeal of Kenan Thompson is lost on me.
Ok… this explains it.
I rest my case.
You’re not alone, by any means. I like Kenan OK, but WUWT was old for me halfway through the first time, and every time after that I’ve just ignored it. Same with many of the other things they do over and over and over again — the bits I already mentioned on Weekend Update, the Latino show where everybody does a head-snapping dance whenever a new guest comes on, the character who always has to one-up everybody, Gilly, etc.
Since it’s beginning to sound like I hate Kristen Wiig, I’ll note that I love the Secret Word game show where Kristen Wiig’s character doesn’t get the concept. IMO it’s the best recurring skit they’ve had since Will Ferrell hosted Celebrity Jeopardy.
I like WUWT but it is really overplayed. It’s the same bit everytime. Interrupting guests, Lindsay Buckingham never talks, Running-Suit Man and random dancers. It would be funny at most 2-3 times a season but it seems to be almost every show because it is so easy to write.
But lots of people watch Two and a Half Men; ergo, it cannot be crap.
Never said it was… it used to be a damn funny show. It is now sort of coasting on it’s past glory… sort of like some other comedy show on Saturday Nights that I can’t remember the name of right now.
I will however argue that SNL in it’s prime was far funnier than 2.5 men in it’s prome.
They’re 10 shows into this season and I think this is only the first or second time it’s been on.
I’m a little back and forth on it. It’s the classic example of SNL’s repetitivness in their skits but it’s also so fun to see what they’re going to do next and it has such energy. It may be worth doing earlier in the show because of that energy. I can live with it being on 3 or 4 times a season.
One fun aspect of What Up With That is the random real-life guests who just sit there without saying anything. And I have to give Kenan Thompson credit for his performance in the skit, as it seems to require a tremendous amount of energy.
I was primarily annoyed at the band playing crap, when they could have done something really good.
I watch it every week since forever.
It seems the writers are just phoning it in, playing it safe, maybe even forced to write plain jane skits because of the cast is bitchy, or the producers are.
I don’t expect a laugh a minute. I don’t have to get all the jokes. I could care less about Snookie, the Kardashians and Honey Boo whatever.
I’d just like somewhat entertainment for a premier broadcast, which is why I watch.
There is a lot of subpar going on, when there is plenty to poke fun at.
