SNL 12/16 Justin Timberlake

I don’t listen to Timberlake, but I thought his delivery and timing were pretty good on this show.
I fast forwarded the hip hop kids in the mine shaft, as well as the Nancy Grace bit, though some of the other skits were okay.

Silly question: Is Barry Gibb really the angry ayhole he’s portrayed to be on the Barry Gibb show?

I liked the homelessville skit where he was dressed up like a can of soup. My Dick in a box was pretty funny as well.

This was the first SNL that I sat through from beginning to end, this season. I did tune out during the WAY too long Nancy grace train wreck.

The first half of the show was great. Justin Timberlake killed it last time he was on, so I figured he’d be pretty good, and he was. He’s like Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin - when he’s in a skit, he’s usually the best performer on the stage. He made the normally lame ‘Target’ sketch funny. The soup can dancing was hilarious. And he was awesome in the digital short, “C*ck in a Box”. That was absolutely hilarious.

That’s maybe the 3rd or 4th good SNL episode in a row. Maybe the new cast is hitting its stride.

And Bill Hader was great as Alvin the Chipmunk.

I really enjoyed the last time Timberlake hosted (about a year or two ago) so I had somewhat been looking forward to this episode and I really liked it. I thought everything was pretty funny, other than the Nancy Grace skit, which started out funny but then went on too long. My favorites were the Homelessville and Hip Hop Kids sketches. No matter what you think of Timberlake’s music, you have to admit that he is a natural performer; he’s was a lot better on SNL than many professional comedians.

The “Homelessville” skit was OK, but I thought it was a bad sign that it was so high in the running order. When he did a similarly themed sketch during his (generally stronger) previous appearance, it was a little farther back.

The Hip Hop Kids sketch didn’t look promising, but it was redeemed by the fact that many of the kids were clobbered by rocks and/or eaten.

My Dick in a Box was good.

No at all. But he did have two comments: a) He’s not angry; and b) Robin talks a LOT.

Best SNL since, well, Timberlake’s last appearance. I had such high hopes for Hugh Laurie’s episode and it was just okay for me. This? The Cup-O-Soup skit, then the brilliant “Dick In A Box” had me rolling.

Minus points for the Nancy Grace skit - make it stop! - and the re-appearance of Jimmy Fallon. Did we really miss him? The Bee Gees skit isn’t funny. Barry Gibb isn’t known for being an asshole, or the complete opposite, which is what would make it work. What’s next, Horatio Sanz reprising Carol? (I hope that doesn’t happen. Ever.)

The Timberlake-as-sassy-girl skit stunk. And I didn’t listen to his performance. But as much as I’d like to hate him for NSync, wardrobe malfunctions, etc. I really think he’s great as an SNL performer.

Best ep since Alec Baldwin. Genuinely enjoyable all the way through. I think I remember Tina Fey saying he was one of the surprisingly talented SNL hosts (right after affirming that Paris Hilton is exactly the dumb c*nt she appears to be).

It was pretty good, particularly the homelessville skit and the “dick in the box” one, which was another in their line of “SNL Digital Shorts.” They seem to have one of these every week, apparently in the desperate hope that they can recapture the viral popularity of the “Lazy Sunday” video. But you can’t create that sort of thing; it has to happen spontaneously.

I think “dick in a box” might get a viral run…it’s just such a great Christmas carol.

I love the Barry Gibb…I think the joke comes from the fact that most people would assume the BeeGees are unassuming and laid back, and instead you get a high pitched, screaming asshole.

UNCENSORED Dick in a Box:

The version on the NBC website is also uncensored.

I generally liked this show. Timberlake puts everything out there when he hosts. The musical cold open was good…

Bill Hader is growing on me, much like Fred Armison has. I hate, hate, hate, the Target sketch. Has anyone ever experienced that clerk? Between that character and her aunt-what’s-her-name’s-movie-reviews, I’ve begun to dislike Kristen Wiig, which is too bad because she seems like a pretty capable performer when she’s not doing something too over the top.

They should turn down Fallon when he offers to do cameos. It’s not so much that he plays Gibb as such an ass, it’s that they fill the stage with actors in full makeup, ready to do what could be interesting characters, and then you get five minutes of Jimmy Fallon shouting “it’s all about me!”

Gaah! I can’t stop laughing at My Dick in a Box. Now I can’t get the song out of my head, either.

  1. Cut a hole in a box…

Thanks for sharing the video!

I don’t usually watch the show anymore. My wife and I sometimes watch the beginning and switch channels pretty quickly. The opening grabbed us this time, and Timberlake kept us watching. I was impressed and entertained by everything he did.

No interest in any music since since 1981 or any of its performers, but have to agree that Timberlake does an awesome job when he hosts. The Barry Gibb show is always a highlight, and weekend update was especially good. Overall- not bad.

Darell Hammond’s Jimmy Carter impersonation was almost identical to his Jesse Jackson- are the two really similar, or was Hammond just being funny (or lazy)?

I noticed the same tics, too. I think Hammond reached the end of his talent spectrum a while back, so we’re seeing some unintended overlap in his impressions. (He badly needs to be retired from the show, IMO… his talent for mimicry was interesting to watch for a few years at most, but there’s just something intensely unfunny about him as a person that saps the humor out of whatever bit he’s doing—most of which have none to spare, lately.)

I thought the lyrics were “Cock in a Box” until I saw this thread and watched the uncut video. Stupid bleeps.

Forgot to mention how fully I agree with this statement. This is one sketch premise that leaves me completely baffled as to what’s supposed to be funny. That the character is annoying? SNL and MADtv are both huge offenders in failing to recognize that ANNOYING IS NOT EQUIVALENT TO FUNNY.

Even more incongruous to me were the bursts of riotous audience laughter that punctuated everything the woman (or Timberlake) said— actually I noticed this throughout the show. It sounded like they had more/louder audience plants or something.

First SNL I watched in a while and I thought it was pretty good, although we didn’t really watch the last sketch with the uptight woman giving some sort of monologue…boring. After the Target sketch I turned to my wife and said, “I guess one of the writer’s had a bad experience at Target this week.” Not funny. “Homelessville”, “Hip Hop Kids” were funny, but “Dick in a Box” was tremendous.

Though I hate the Target bit as much as anybody, I have to admit I liked Timberlake’s weirdo long-haired employee character. ‘I hope a third thing doesn’t happen…’ had me laughing.
