Timberlake Night Live

Do they just write good sketches only when he hosts? This was a great show. LOVED the plasticville.
Always love the David Patterson jersey jokes.

This is the best show they’ve done since Anne Hathaway was on, and probably exceeded that in awesomeness.

The cold open with Forte doing Geitner was OK; the “written test” gag got a bit old but at least they managed to mix up the punchlines.

JT’s song and dance number for the monologue was brilliant.

The fake commercial was OK.

Target Lady was at least bearable; I usually despise this sketch. JT’s character in it was amusing, but still it was too much.

The Irish immigrant sketch was very good. “It’ll be a perfectly normal way for a man to sing!”

The sequel to Dick in a Box was clearly divinely inspired, as was the original one.

Patterson and Spitzer on update == ROFLs. Giant ROFLs. You might even say Belgian ROFLs. Also, “that’s not his bat!” And Nimoy saying “dickheads.”

Barry Gibb talk show, meh.

The pirates sketch was pretty good, too. 'specially when they murdered Pluto. I always hated that fucker.

Justin could easily be a permanent cast member.

Loved the Irish immigrant sketch.

The digital short wasn’t as funny as Dick In a Box, but what could ever live up to that?

Even when the skits are meh, Timberlake gives it 110%.

Best show of the season.

What was up with Zachary Quinto’s hair? It was a very weird shape.

He looked like a young Egon.

Timberlake is willing to do pretty much anything, and that includes mock himself, which always helps a lot.

If NBC ever decides they want to do a variety series, like along the lines of Ed Sullivan or what they did in the 50s, they’d be wise to get Justin to host.

Why would he do that? He’s an enormously successful singer, and has a film career. I can’t see him agreeing to host a variety show on TV. I’m just glad he’s willing to do SNL from time to time. I’m not a fan of his in any other venue, but as an SNL host, he’s one of the best.

Best show of the season. (Second, IMO, is The Rock’s episode, on the strength of the Hawaiian lounge singers skit.) Not a sour note until that end thing with the Pirates of the Caribbean (why did they all have to be gay?) getting the Somali pirates’ weapons.

The immigrants on a boat skit nailed the fact that Timberlake has excellent comedic timing. That’s something that a lot of the SNL hosts, particularly the ones who aren’t primarily actors, lack. But he has it, as well as a fairly good sense of how to make fun of himself successfully, without it being embarrassing. (Did anyone else catch the nod, during his monologue song, to the Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction? Pitch perfect.) He needs to be an annual host.

David Paterson Jersey jokes? What’s that about? He’s the Governor of New York.

Exactly.

I still don’t get it. (hint: I didn’t watch it) I generally don’t find Saturday Night Live to be funny at all, but I would love to hear about it when it was funny.

I loved it…the immigrant sketch was brilliant. The only sour note through the whole thing was that dig he took at Britney Spears. I won’t deny it was funny, but it was a little too meanspirited for my tastes…like kicking someone when they’re already down. And I’m no Britney fan.

But all day long I’ve been singing, “I’m a mother lover, you’re a mother lover…”

e.g., “How do you know when the worst is behind you? You seen a sign that says ‘You are now leaving New Jersey’!”

Example. Other example.

The delivery on the New Jersey jokes are so overwrought.

Do they expect their audience to not understand the jokes. “Lets get back to the polls.”, “That’s what he said…to a prostitute.” Why would he need to say, “To a prostitute.”

The funniest bit was when he said, “What do you have against New Jersey?” “A southern border unfortunately.”

See, I didn’t mind that as much because it was a potshot at himself too, as well as the silly expectations of the public vis-a-vis female youth-popular celebrities compared to their male counterparts. Besides, Britney’s already come clean that she did not exit their relationship a virgin, and I don’t think anyone (at least anyone without a scary obsession) cares about the details nearly a decade  later.

The humor, as I see it, is meant to be in the undue level of glee the NY governors take in their lame jokes, not in the lame jokes themselves.

Awesome episode. I’m a big SNL fan, and I generally think it’s a lot better than it gets credit for being, but this was a real standout episode. The Barry Gibb thing leaves me a bit cold, except that it’s fun to watch Jimmy Fallon try to make Justin Timberlake laugh (and usually succeed).

By the way, a friend of mine knows Timberlake, and says that he is every bit as personable and likable and engaging in person as you would think from watching him on SNL.

I want to hate JT, I really do. But I can’t, because he is so damn good on SNL. Acting, comedic timing, singing, willing to look the fool, you name it - a great host. If only he could wean himself from the cue cards, he’d be perfect.

I can’t speak about the sketches, because I tend to be multi-tasking when SNL is on, but Mother Lover was one of the best-conceived, -written and -performed things SNL has done in years.

I just watched it again on Hulu. Frakking brilliant. I’m going to watch it again.

Who can change my Mediocre Face…

Implants… Implants…
Heh.
