Snl - 3/12

Did anyone see last night’s Saturday Night Live? It was hilarious. Best episode of the seaon, bar none. I think I laughed at almost every skit. Did anyone else have the same reaction?

Also, why was David Spade on the show? He didn’t mention any movies coming out. But he was excelllent, and didn’t even fall back on doing any of his old repeating gags.

The abrupt turnaround in quality made me wonder if A) David Spade re-energized the cast and writers, and B) whether it might not be a good idea to routinely bring back old SNL members on a semi-formal basis? They could have a guest host, AND a ‘old-timer’ cast member revolving in each week. I think that would inject some new life into the show. It’d be neat if there was a different old cast member every week. One week Aykroyd, another Jane Curtin, perhaps even some of the lesser players like Garrett Morris or Joe Piscopo. It might even revitalize some careers.

Zing! Burn. Wasn’t that Alec Baldwin?

Best? I was going to say that it was the worst. Not a single skit had the remotest spark of humor. And Spade was totally wasted as being a foil for the regular cast members. Does the world need another weird artistic couple sketch?

Did you notice that not even the audience could find anything in Weekend Update funny enough to laugh at loud enough to be heard? Of course, Horatio Sanz went on and on and on without one funny line, which could take the humor out of anything.

Did like Jack Johnson, though.

The bit about the CNN reader dating Limbaugh:

"You see Rush naked. And you like it!!!

Probably not. But as weird artistic couple sketches go, I thought this was one of the better ones.

I kept flipping from that (oh gawd, it’s *still *him) over to a Buffy rerun. Eventually just stayed with Buffy. “But of course!” , you say to yourself. But it was Beer Bad.

woomba!

Clearly we inhabit different planets, Sam Stone, because I also thought it was by far the worst episode of the season thus far.

The Martha Stewart sketch didn’t break any new “prison joke” or “Martha Stewart joke” ground.

The “two guys in lockup” sketch had me in pokerfaced silence.

The “redneck convention” was simultaneously tired, obvious and offensive. You’d think they’ve done “Appalachian ER” enough times to get that kind of shit out of their system.

I’m with you in wondering why David Spade was hosting the show, but for a different reason: I wonder why anyone finds him funny.

I’ve never seen him in any context where I didn’t have a strong urge to slap him.

That couple and their living room looked distractingly like they were from A Clockwork Orange. I kept expecting the skit to go in that direction, but it never did.

Oh, c’mon - Michael Jackson being late for court because he was stuck in a 12-year-old was pretty good!

And I was amazed that they had real musicians on for a change!

Agree on both points. Weekend Update used to be my favorite part of SNL, but maybe that’s because I started watching when Dennis Miller was the host. It’s absolutely terrible now. What was up with the “hip-hop breakdown”. You know it has to be tough for the “actors” as they realize that nobody is laughing in the audience. Nobody.

Put me down in the “lame episode” camp. I’ve always felt you could tell by the first segment whether the show will be worth watching – and I was proven right again.

I stuck through Weekend Update, but when the best thing on the show is a repeat of the Woomba commercial, and you find yourself wishing that Amy Poehler will stay dead after Tina Fey pumps seven rounds into her, then it’s time to change channels.

Bonus question: Would a dead Amy Poehler have any less personality than the live Amy Poehler does? Discuss.

Well, that’s strange. I’ve been a vicious critic of SNL this season, and I really thought last night’s episode was better than usual. I liked Woomba (“the little pink robot that cleans your lady business”), I liked the “Dirtbag and Burnout” convention. Sure, they’ve done redneck jokes a lot, but some of the observations last night were pretty funny, like the guy who wears cutoffs so short the front pockets show out the bottom. I even liked update.

Sure, there were some lame skits. But there always are, always have been, and always will be. I just thought the show was a cut above average.

Count my vote as “worst episode of the season.”

I do think the cast is talented, though - maybe even Horatio Saenz, if he wouldn’t stop breaking out of character as he usually does every episode. It’s just that the writing seems flat. The cast hasn’t changed too much from a couple of years ago, but the chemistry seemed better.

I think that if Mike Myers was in the strange artist skit, it would have been much funnier. He’s got a talent for playing foreign subculture characters.

The Woomba ad was first shown in an earlier episode this season, so if it’s a main part of your defense of this episode, it’s a weak one.

old…new…it’s still Tina in a bathrobe.
