For some reason this post made me think of Paul Newman in ‘Cool Hand Luke’. A truly very cool character.
They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother–
You know I’ve suddenly realized I may not be qualified to post to this thread anymore. I’ve never seen either iteration of ‘Shaft’.
I will fix this shortcoming once I get a chance to get to the video store.
Shut yo mouth
Wasn’t Marlon Brando cool at one time?
Isaac Hayes is the icebox that made Shaft cool.
We better include Curtis Mayfield too.
I’m only familiar with Snoop from the movie Baby Boy. Repulsive is really the best description of his character, though that’s not a bad description of the protaganist for most of the movie, either.
I nominate Buster Keaton as coolest dude ever.
Okay now, I really dread this and I’m not sure I really want to know, as I do rate Snoop in the cool department as previously stated, but could someone tell this Euro-doper what happened in these Nokia ads that keep being mentioned. In what way were they uncool? Or was just the fact that they were done at all uncool?
Nokia sponsored this year’s College Football Championship game (turned out it wasn’t really the championship game, but that’s another story). The centerpiece of their promotion was a series of lame “mystery” bits in which Snoop was seeking out who stole the championship trophy. The kind of tripe you would expect from a game show host. Ended up with him interrogating a school mascot before being interrupted by Johnnie Cochran (the O.J. Simpson lawyer). That’s my best recollection of it anyway, it’s something I would rather forget.
He also did some shilling for AOL 9.0
Rappers, as a species, are probably the least cool animals on the planet. However, I have always found Snoop cool despite myself - there’s just something about that guy. I’ll second that it probably has something to do with the cronic.
Another candidate, IMHO, would be Jimmy Stewart. He was a man’s man. A man’s man’s man, in fact.
Pat from “It’s Pat!” gets an honourable mention as well.
Both.
As Murc said, the trophy was stolen and snoop played a detective and a smooth talker in the commercials. He dropped some watered down line like “that’s the coo’ ba-dizzle” and the whole thing was such an obvious attempt at “cross demographic marketing” or something.
But also, just snoop dogg shilling for such a product was lame. For me, who was about 18 when “The Chronic” and “Doggystyle” came out (and thought they were about the cooolest CD’s ever – and still do) it struck a bad note, moreso than seeing him playing a pimp or drug dealer in a movie.
