No time off for weather, here (we’re too used to it), but as a kid, when it mattered, I was blessed to go to the most snow-day-prone high school in the city. It was a Catholic school, but not actually under the diocese, so they got to set their own rules on when to close. They decided that, whenever it was announced that all Catholic schools were closing, they would close automatically, to spare any confusion. They also decided that whenever all public schools were announced as closing, they’d close then, too, and they sometimes also decided to close unilaterally.
The other great thing about Catholic schools is, there’s a patron saint for everything. The patron saint of snow days is, as our teachers informed us, St. Scholastica, sister of St. Benedict (our patron). So St. Scholastica, pray for all those in this thread.
My kids got high school off today.
Me, I’m in the office as the trains were running.
Been seeing a bunch o’ white out the window all day, tho most seems to be going horizontally so its tough to see what is coming down and what is blowing.
There is an east or northeast wind, though, and that usually means precipitation. It alos means that places at the west end of Lake Ontario are getting their rare lake-effect snow; when I lived in Oakville, we got pasted like that one year with about 40 cm in a day. It was amazing to look at.
Hmmph. The LEEP program still has class today from U of I. Of course, that’s online education, so…still. Hmmmph.
Homewood checking in: 6-7 inches and still snowing here. Wind is picking up as well. I’m of til Friday! Yippee!
Mrs. Runestar and I may be moving back to Indiana later this year to be closer to her ailing parents.
This sort of thing is not making me look forward to the move - and I lived in Indiana for 16 years!
Also - I notice that one of the major concerns of the Indianapolis media is whether the storm will force the cancellation of the IU-Purdue basketball game. Gotta love Indiana’s priorities
Well, thankfully it only took hubby 30-45 minutes to get home. I had just enough time to shovel out some tire paths in the driveway. It wasn’t terribly deep, but the top inch or so was pretty firm. The only tough part was where the driveway/curb curved down to the street. There it was like 18" deep.
Since the snow is expected to continue all night and into tomorrow, we’ll see if he goes to work tomorrow. If not we can “celebrate” Valentine’s Day all day long. So long as Spencer sleeps, that is!
Yeah, everyone around here has closed - Malone, Walsh, Stark State, Kent-Stark…I can’t believe we’re actually getting more snow than Cleveland, for once. They were just on the news talking about how Stark has been getting the worst of this.
My husband just made it home - he must’ve had less traffic than we thought.
It’s been snowing steadily all day, but I can’t see any appreciable difference in the conditions outside. We started the day snowed in and we’ll end it snowed in.
I work for the State of Ohio. We never close. I think we’ve closed twice in the nearly 17 years I’ve worked there. So today was the story of: 1) all area schools were closed, 2) large private employers sent their people home at noon, 3) looks like all small businesses are closed - when I walked home from the bus stop just about all the businesses along the way were closed, 4) the city of Columbus sent non-essential employees home at 1:30, 5) all the major malls closed early, 6) OSU cancelled classes at 1:30 (another blue-moon only event), 7) the Governor held a press conference at 3:00 and expressed concern (OK, it was more than that, but really, it wouldn’t have hurt anything to send non-essential employees home too).
Many of my coworkers used vacation time and went home early, so by the time I came home there was almost no one left downtown. My bus was exactly on time (and nearly empty) and got me home right on time too. So there’s that.
We’re getting a really unpleasant round of icy rain right now. It’s never good when the rain sounds crunchy.
Maybe a miracle will happen and I’ll have a snow day tomorrow. [/whine]
We’re expecting a storm here, too. Our company won’t officially close but they’ve said it’s up to our discretion. Essential personnel will be expected to come in. I’m the polar (heh) opposite of that so I will probably stay home.
I remember huddling by the radio as a kid/teen, praying for them to name our school. The wonderful relief when they said it!
Well, as I said upthread, we got several inches here today. But right now, what’s coming down is pure ice. If there’s school tomorrow, I’ll eat my mittens!
Looks like we may be done here, with about 1" of snow total, maybe 1.5". The storm is moving east over Lake Michigan and has mostly passed northeast Wisconsin. Look out, Eastern US!
I’m not going to plow unless something changes overnight. Haven’t plowed my driveway since early January, and only once this whole winter season.
YAY! I’m glad it ended ok. My apologies for not realizing how bad it was where you’re at. Apprently the reports I saw were south of Indy where it was mostly sleet & ice.
My husband called off this morning although he only works five miles from home. (we’re in Anderson) His car is on it’s last legs and he didn’t think he would make it. His co-worker called to say they closed down at 11:30 and it took his wife an hour to make the ten minute drive in her Jeep to pick him up. He also told hubby the boss said go ahead and sleep in tomorrow, he’s not gonna attempt to open.
I had toyed with the idea of trying to make the 35 mile commute tomorrow, but I keep checking the updates at the online paper in the city where I work. The mayor has declared a state of emergency until mid afternoon Wednesday so looks like I’m sleeping in tomorrow too.
Oh boy. All roads are closed here–only emergency personnel and people going home are allowed out. The snow will continue all night and all day tomorrow… 30% chance it will still be snowing tomorrow night.
Gosh. It’s almost a little scary. The half-gallon of milk I bought two days ago is almost empty, and I can’t go get more! Arrrgh! 21st century angst!
Central NY snow day update: In an unbelievable pre-emptive move, all the schools in my county are closed for tomorrow. Usually, we never find out if we have a day off until the last possible minute I’d have to commit to getting ready for work. Calling it off the day before is kind of a big deal.
Checking outside, it’s not really snowing that badly yet and the roads aren’t too messed up either. I think it would be hilarious if this storm didn’t really happen after all. Wouldn’t have to miss my first Valentine’s Day with the fiance, which is really the only downside for me to this. And paying the guy to plow the driveway.
I just tried to check noaa.gov to get the latest forecast for my area for tonight, and all they have posted is the forecast as of 10:15 tomorrow morning! wtf?
We’ve apparently been upgraded to ‘blizzard’ here. The 2-5 inches we were supposed to get overnight (as of the Weather Channel at noon) has now been changed to 8-12 inches.
Something tells me I won’t be going into the office first thing tomorrow.
I just came in from blowing off the driveway a second time today. Drifts were about 18 inches in some places, but it seems to have stopped actually snowing. Looks like the worst is past for us right now.
This mug of hot cocoa sure does taste yummy, Sattua, I have extra milk, I can slip some through the internet at ya?
