In Ontario, vehicles registered in northern Ontario can use certain types of studs, but vehicles registered in southern Ontario can not use studs. In reality, very few vehicles use stubs here.
For New England, from here, studded tires are OK:
Local State Studded Tire Regulations
CONNECTICUT: November 15 - April 30
MAINE: October 2 - May 1
MASSACHUSETTS: November 2 - April 30
NEW HAMPSHIRE: No restrictions
NEW YORK: October 16 - April 30
RHODE ISLAND: November 15 - April 1
VERMONT: No restrictions
Here’s a summary of chain laws in the US and Canada. Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont have “no chain laws” and I don’t know if that means they are allowed or not allowed. I didn’t think passenger vehicles could use them on main roads??
What really stinks is private plow trucks can’t just plow main roads, even if it would help them or other drivers.
[Muffin doing a happy dance!]It’s been snowing, and the temp has been dropping![/Muffin doing a happy dance!]
You can have my snow too, my friend. And the cold. My old bones aren’t up to it.
I’m so nice.
We got a temp drop, but no snow. I believe our high today was about 28F. Brrrrrr!
waiting impatiently for snow, maybe later next week
…Studs? Chains?
We just switch driving modes. Some people cave in for the winter tires. Most people I know? Time to take the combination brush/ice scraper out of the trunk, put a shovel in the trunk, and rejoice for your car starter.
Me too. Of course I have M/S tires on my 4wd pickup.

Update:
Yay! It IS snowing! Like, you can’t see the top of Mount Royal for clouds, thick-and-fast flurries, and already at least ONE impromptu snowball fight!
Woohoo!
It’s snowing! Okay, it’s all slushy and wet and icy, but it’s snowing! And we’re supposed to get ten to twenty centimetres by tonight!
(I’ve been amusing / scaring my family members by randomly pointing outside the window and announcing, with great glee, “It’s snowing! Look, it’s snowing!” all morning. And singing Christmas carols to myself not-quite-under-my-breath when going to school.)
[SKIERS]
Snow, glorious snow!
What wouldn’t we give for
That extra bit more –
That’s all that we live for
Why should we be fated to
Do nothing but brood
On snow,
Magical snow,
Wonderful snow,
Marvellous snow,
Fabulous snow,
[MUFFIN K120m FALSETTO JUMP]
Beau-ti-ful snooooooooooooooooooooow,
[SKIERS]*
Glorious snow!*
(My apologies to Charles Dickens and Lionel Bart)
Don’t need no (wet, nasty, cold-assed) snow!
We got snow! Not much, just about an inch, but it’s supposed to keep going all day. I’m gleeful.
Loch was open on the weekend, and Lutsen was open the previous weekend. Just one run each, though.
Meanwhile, back at the chalet, my outside LED Christmas lights are up and doing their best to contribute to global warming. This weekend I hope to go kill a tree and drag it inside. Ain’t snow season wonderful!
Snow yesterday. Snow today.
Environment Canada has a snowfall warning in effect for TBay.
Environment Canada is my new best friend.
We get snow too! We do! A storm is supposed to come to Tahoe beginning around 12/06, up in the mountains where snow belongs.
I just might drive up there to de-virgin my 4wd pickup.
It was supposed to snow Saturday, turning to rain. But it snowed all day. The forecast said snow all day Saturday, with rain on Sunday. It’s still snowing. Rain tomorrow, it says.
Now, I like snow. But with two destroyed knees it can be a little dicey. I’ll have to sweep the walk to get to the Jeep, but it will just get snowed on again. Maybe I’ll just sweep the stoop and step onto the lawn.
Hee hee! We’ve had a nor’easter going overnight and all day today. Must get the tires switched…
I know I’ve mentioned it elsewhere, but I have to in this thread: we got snow! About eight inches or so, and we’ll probably get more overnight.
SNOW! YAY! It’s so pretty! Not so much fun to step in when you’re not wearing boots and it comes up to your ankle, but pretty nonetheless.
Of course, in this town, nothing stops because of snow. If it did, nothing would happen for six months of the year. So I had to go out job-hunting…in snow. Driving was interesting, but I did fine. Let’s hear it for my studded snow tires!
Believe me, it doesn’t take much getting used to. I would like to be back up North for one or two days, but I much prefer no snow.
However, when there is? It’s thick heavy wet snow, and everyone begins to drive like they’ve never seen snow before. This is on their way to the grocery store for milk, bread, and toilet paper. Then they all call off of work the next day because they can.
Clearly, this post was written by someone who’s had way too many snowy, cold winters.
