Seems to have been. I don’t recall seeing a lot of objecting going on in 1989 when the animators drew her that way.
Well, I objected to the fact that they made it into a happy ending, but that was it.

I’d be curious to read any such objections. Got a link?
Even if you were to assume Mulan is a failure anyway (and by all accounts it is legitimately pretty bad, dull and horribly different from the cartoon version), that’s one failure in nine movies. Eight for nine is an incredible run in that industry, and obviously the profitable ones blow away whatever they lost on Mulan. And that’s despite the fact a lot of the other movies weren’t all that great either.
I don’t think there’s any question that the dwarves in either story are meant to be humans with dwarfism, and I doubt Peter Dinklage is confused on the issue, either. Yes, they’re “fairy tale” dwarves, not “real” dwarfs, but obviously there’s a significant history of deliberately confusing the two in western culture, right down to the word we use to describe humans who are extremely short. I’m not well versed on the historical depiction of little people in art and popular culture - or, for that matter, in Disney’s Snow White - to have an opinion on the validity of Dinklage’s criticism, but the idea that Disney took a bunch of stereotypes about humans with dwarfism, and dropped them on a bunch of fantasy dwarves, isn’t inherently absurd, and deserves to be refuted on its actual merits, not with the ignorant bullshit presented by the OP.
Yeah, The Love Bug was the #2 top grossing movie in 1969. Some mistake.

Originally dwarves weren’t even short (which is funny considering that we use “dwarf” as a synonym for “small” these days). In the Medieval period, when pagan beliefs became “silly folktales” as Christianity took over all corners of Europe, that’s when that aspect started to appear. I think it was an attempt to diminish their importance, by diminishing their size. Originally they were nature and/or death spirits who took on the appearance of old men and lived in mountain areas. (Hence the imagery of having long beards.)
I don’t know how early they were portrayed as having proportions similar to that of people with disproportionate dwarfism. That may have been a Disney idea originally. It seems almost like an etymological feedback loop; dwarves in folklore become short, then small humans are called dwarves, then Disney patterns their dwarves after some types of human dwarfism.
No it didn’t. It was just a super stupid question that tried and failed to make a super stupid point. The only way it’s like a minefield is that it blew up in your face.
The simpler explanation is that it’s an opera, which have limited appeal as movies.

FWIW, this is a really interesting article by a woman who’s written a couple of books about this history of little people as performers.
Can a class of individuals that was once considered among the most prominent of freaks be “defreaked”? And if so, what could cause such a makeover to occur? The answers to these questions are playing out among persons with dwarfism in an increasing number of nations. Although the social roles of many members of this former “freak” population have undergone a transformation during the last half-century, the forces that caused them to be mocked and exploited as they struggled to cope are still very much in evidence.
Who cares?
The original Animated versions are classics, and will be admired for generations.
The live-action ones are poorly made & are unlikely to be seen, in a decade.

Who cares? Disney shareholders and employees? Look, if you don’t like the new live-action ones, that’s your prerogative. But to call them “poorly-made” and “mistakes”, when obviously a ton of people wanted to see them and enjoyed them, is just a bunch of deluded elitist bullshit.

On this site?? Can’t be.

Ad hominem example of deluded elitist bullshit
You’re talking about the original “Porgy and Bess” foolishness, right?
You won’t be surprised to learn that Little Mermaid and Pinocchio are already in the works. But you may be baffled to hear that Bambi and Lilo & Stitch are also getting the same treatment.
ok Bambi I know they can do it because they’ve sort of done the forest animals as a movie before (see (“Perri” )but how the hell can they do lilo as stitch? stitch and the other aliens as CGI?
Tho concerning the op …is he going to throw a fit if they ever make the dungeons and dragons dragon lance movie ? because dwarves are a huuuge part of that universe …
And I have no idea why you’re referring to Herbie the Love Bug. My 10 year old self thought that movie was awesome.
5 year old me thought so too although I did wish my middle name wasn’t herbert for a few years …

I doubt it. The dwarfs in that universe are people. The dwarfs in snow white are sort of a joke.
