Snow White: White?

What’s your heritage?
Irish/Scottish
**
What’s your phenotype (eyes/hair/complexion)?**
Blue-green eyes, dark brown, curly hair, fair skin which nonetheless does tan well if I spend much time in the sun (see below)

Do you consider yourself white?
Yes.

If so, have you ever been considered non-white by others?
Oddly enough, yes. I really don’t see it myself, I think I look as white as can be, but as a teenager, a few people said that with my curly hair and full lips, I looked like a “white Lauren Hill”, and an Iranian friend insisted I must have some non-white heritage because “caucasians just don’t go that dark in the sun.” Also, after living in Greece for a while, I began to be taken as Greek or Italian by people of those nationalities.

Where and when did you grow up?
Little town called South Shields on the North-East coast of England which has a large population of people of Celtic origin, but which has also had a large Yemini population since the 1890s, and was the site of the first ever recorded British race-riot in 1919. So you never know…

What’s your heritage? Anglo-Irish, German, likely some French.
What’s your phenotype (eyes/hair/complexion)? Brown-hazel/Black/Pale-freckled.
Do you consider yourself white? Yes.
If so, have you ever been considered non-white by others? No.
If not, have you ever been considered white by others? N/A
**Where and when did you grow up? **Where? Southern California. When? Still waiting.
What about Snow White? Sure, her skin was white as snow, but her hair was black as ebony. Then again, she was German. Thoughts?“White as snow, red as blood, black as ebony wood.” But of course she was white.

Well, yeah, lots of people are white. Depending on how subtle you want to be about races (yeah, yeah, there ain’t no such thing), people from northern Africa are either White or Moorish. People from Europe, the Middle East, and their descendants without mixed ancestry, are white. That doesn’t mean that being born in Europe automagically makes you white; my baker is white (a naturally blonde, blue-eyed Spaniard) and her Nigeria-born husband is black, making their children mulatto, biracial or black depending on your political views.
What’s your heritage? 50% Basque, 50% born-in-Catalonia; this second half has ancestry from Leon (although apparently the lastname is also Basque), Asturias, Aragon, Catalonia, Italy and Germany. The short version is “Hispanic.”
What’s your phenotype (eyes/hair/complexion)? Brown on brown on brown, although the brown-ness of the skin depends on how much I’ve been seeing the sun. My BFF is a green-eyed Snow-white; my maternal female cousin is a redhead; my paternal side is full of light-eyed blondes (including Dad)
Do you consider yourself white? Yes. So do US Customs Officers and US Marshalls stationed at the US-Mexican border; I’ve had problems getting them to stamp my passport (as required by law in order for my Visa to stay valid) because they refused to believe I wasn’t American (apparently there’s only two nationalities and “the other one” doesn’t have any whites).
If so, have you ever been considered non-white by others? Not to my face.
If not, have you ever been considered white by others? N/A.
Where and when did you grow up? Spain.

What’s your heritage?

All Dutch as far as I know of, possibly some German in there.
*
What’s your phenotype (eyes/hair/complexion)?*

Green/brown eyes, red hair, white. Do not put me in direct sunlight.
*
Do you consider yourself white?*

Red hair, freckles, burns like a steak in the sun? Yes.
*
If so, have you ever been considered non-white by others?*

Not that I know of :)*

If not, have you ever been considered white by others?*

I guess. It’s never come up.
*
Where and when did you grow up?*

The Netherlands.
*
What about Snow White? Sure, her skin was white as snow, but her hair was black as ebony. Then again, she was German. Thoughts?*

I know plenty of very white girls with black hair. Including a few from Germany. Brown hair is probably a bit commoner but then again, my hair color isn’t exactly the standard either, and it’s typically north/west-european.

-What’s your heritage?
Peruvian
-What’s your phenotype (eyes/hair/complexion)?
black / dark brown / Mediterraenan
-Do you consider yourself white?
Sure
-If so, have you ever been considered non-white by others?
In more than one occasion. When I get a serious tan I become very Middle-Eastern
-Where and when did you grow up?
Peru, all my life.
-What about Snow White? Sure, her skin was white as snow, but her hair was black as ebony. Then again, she was German. Thoughts?
Maybe she is my eldest sister. Her skin is ghost-white an her hair raven-black.

I tend to think more in terms of culture than race. So, for example, as an Australian whose paternal grandparents were Russian and Ukrainian and maternal grandparents were Australian, I think saying I’m half-Anglo, half-Eastern European is much more meaningful than just “white”. I mean, I identify much more closely with other second- and third-generation non-British immigrants (esp. Italians and Maltese) than with classic “white” Australians, due to shared experiences.

What’s your heritage?

Like I said, Anglo-Aussie and Eastern European. Go further back and it’s mainly British, German and Russian/Ukrainian. (So I suppose you can summarise that as Germanic and Slavic heritage.)

What’s your phenotype (eyes/hair/complexion)?

Brown/dark brown/fair

Do you consider yourself white?

Yes.

If so, have you ever been considered non-white by others?

No.

Where and when did you grow up?

Sydney’s western suburbs in the late '70s/'80s.

What about Snow White? Sure, her skin was white as snow, but her hair was black as ebony. Then again, she was German. Thoughts?

Very close to my own phentotype (and especially my father’s), so it’s not particularly surprising.

A note to my previous post: while I’ve never had anybody tell me “you’re not white, you’re Hispanic!”, I have had people other than the aforementioned border guards tell me that “you can’t be Hispanic, you’re white!”

I know Hispanics who’ve been told they couldn’t be Hispanic because they were black or of Chinese descent.

And if dark-haired people aren’t white, half of Scotland (and I don’t mean the imported half) aren’t white. Strange notion, that.

Our employer sent out a questionnaire to collect Federal race and ethnicity self-identification data and the choices are:

A. Ethnicity (please check if applicable)

** Hispanic or Latino** A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race (note: does not include persons of Brazilian or Portuguese culture or origin).

B. Race (please check one or more races)

** American Indian or Alaska Native** A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America), and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment.

** Asian** A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam.

** Black or African American** A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa.

** Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander **A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands.

** White** A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.

So, I’m

What’s your phenotype (eyes/hair/complexion)? Gray-blue-green/Brown/Pale
Do you consider yourself white? Yup
If so, have you ever been considered non-white by others? Nope
Where and when did you grow up? US, 60s and 70s
What about Snow White? White

What’s your heritage? English, Scottish, Irish, Dutch, and a bit of other things no one is really sure about.
What’s your phenotype (eyes/hair/complexion)? Blue-green with dark brown brows and blond-brown lashes, medium reddish-brown, pale as paste. I have been referred to as “milky-skinned” by people trying to be nice about it.
Do you consider yourself white? Yes.
If so, have you ever been considered non-white by others? Nope. I nearly glow in the dark; the only thing I’ve ever been considered other than white is maybe “night-light.”
If not, have you ever been considered white by others? N/A
Where and when did you grow up? Half in west Louisiana, half in southeastern Pennsylvania.
What about Snow White? Sure, her skin was white as snow, but her hair was black as ebony. Then again, she was German. Thoughts? She was white, because all the fairy tales were about white girls.

What’s your heritage?
German (with a wee bit of Dutch) & Cherokee (card-carrying) on mother’s side; as Irish as Paddy’s pig on father’s side

What’s your phenotype (eyes/hair/complexion)?
Straight dark brown hair, green eyes, skin is beige/taupe in the winter & caramel in the summer.

Do you consider yourself white?
Painfully so.

If so, have you ever been considered non-white by others?
As a kid in North and Central Texas was occasionally mistaken for a 'Messkin when I had a nice summer tan.

If not, have you ever been considered white by others?
My south-of-the-border-heritage friends think I’m exceptionally white.

Where and when did you grow up?
In the late 60s-early 70s and thoughout the 80s in North & Central Texas primarily.

What about Snow White? Sure, her skin was white as snow, but her hair was black as ebony. Then again, she was German. Thoughts?

Without seeing her pubes there’s no way I can be sure, but maybe she just didn’t get much sun.

If I’m not white, then only Frosty the Snowman qualifies. I’m very nearly literally white-skinned, especially when I’m not feeling well (which is often). I also have blue eyes, and relatively light hair compared to the rest of my family. I think I was out of the room when the pigment was being handed out.

My family’s been in America too long to be any particular ethnic, but my background is European Jewish. All over Eastern Europe. I wish I had some interesting exotic ancestors- like those people who take DNA tests and find out they’re 23% Indian- but given that Ashkenazi Jews are one of the most inbred population groups, I’m probably boring white bread all the way through.

I live in the Jewish Capital of America, the Tri-State area. So most of my life has been spent with people similar to myself.

White/Caucasian has nothing to do with hair color. Whites have the most variety of hair colors (as far as I know, everyone else has only black), but there are many Caucasians with black hair. White, to my mind, means “of European descent”. My jury’s still out on whether Mediterranean is white or a catagory of its own. Snow White lives up to her name.

What’s your heritage? **One grandmother called herself Scotch-Irish; the other 3/4, Irish-Irish. **

What’s your phenotype (eyes/hair/complexion)? **Hazel eyes, hair originally light brown, pasty & freckled complexion. **

Do you consider yourself white? Yes, but I’ve read Noel Ignatiev.

If so, have you ever been considered non-white by others? **Nope. Dermatologists call me “very fair.” **

Where and when did you grow up? Mostly Texas; hence my patronage of dermatologists.

What about Snow White? Sure, her skin was white as snow, but her hair was black as ebony. Then again, she was German. Thoughts? **Black hair that turns white fairly early runs on my father’s side of the family. And they’re pretty pale. European genetics is/are a strange brew. **

What’s your heritage? French/Welsh/Scots-Irish/English…my Huguenot ancestors came to Virginia in 1700 (mom’s side might have been sooner, not sure), so it’s kind of a wash, I reckon. There aren’t any other ethnic-seeming names in my family tree, anyway…

What’s your phenotype (eyes/hair/complexion)? green eyes, blondish red hair, pale

**Do you consider yourself white? **Yes. I pretty much sceam white.

If so, have you ever been considered non-white by others? Only if anybody thinks I’m less white because I have a French surname.

If not, have you ever been considered white by others? n/a

Where and when did you grow up? Arkansas, 60s/70s

What about Snow White? Sure, her skin was white as snow, but her hair was black as ebony. Then again, she was German. Thoughts? She is portrayed as white, as far as I can tell…I dunno, any Disney Conspiracy Theorists have the scoop on whatever subliminal evil parent-killing, satan-worshipping, racial-Trojan-Horsing she might be up to?

*What’s your heritage?*German, English, and Swedish in descending order.
What’s your phenotype (eyes/hair/complexion)? Brown, Brown, just plain white, but not albino white.
Do you consider yourself white? Yes.
If so, have you ever been considered non-white by others? I’ll ask the Swedish (just coincidence, not my Swedes) if they think I’m white when I see them next week!
Where and when did you grow up? In the 70’s and 80’s, SE Michigan.
What about Snow White? Whiter than white.

Although, being from SE Michigan myself, the general consensus in my circles was that if you weren’t black, then you you were white.
