Not much of a snowboarder but it looks like I might be after playing Amped 3! Just played for the first time and it was loads of fun. Has anyone played?
I am not really good but I am working at it. Trying to make it passed the first mountain. LOL Anyone have any good tips?
I can’t comment much on Amped, but despite my general hatred of all things EA, I will recommend the SSX series of snowboarding games if you like them a little more fast paced (and a lot less realistic).
My friend Josh and I played that EVERY DAY at his house after school in sixth grade. It was so fun!
I tried SSX and didn’t like it. I was probably just bad at it - had a hard time handling my snowboarder. Kept getting stuck, etc. I prefer skateboarding games - Tony Hawk rules me.
Yeah, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a riot. I was a the point where I could get the TRICKY in the first few jumps and then used turbo mode all the rest of the way down. Very fun!
LOL, I definitely agree! Wish it was not so late in the season or I would go out west! Would definitely go to Lake Tahoe after being on the Northstar mountain for so long…working at moving up to the next mountain. Keep your fingers crossed
myskepticsight, my friend did not like SSX that much either. He says that Amped 3 is more of an enjoyable game experience and could never play SSX again now that Amped 3 is on xbox360. Definitely recommend playing it on HDTV!
SSX 3 was outstanding as well. I don’t think I’ve played either of the first 2 since I got it. SSX on Tour recently came out, but I haven’t heard all that much about it.
That would be because it SUCKS. Really bad. It’s like they took everything that they had done right with SSX3 and said “we want to be different, so f*** that!”
Continuous travel down the mountain? Gone. You get reset to the main menu after every run.
Ability to go anywhere you want, just to ride? Gone. You have to choose specific missions from the main menu. You can go back to old ones, big whoop.
Cool music? Gone, replaced by headbanging crap.
Friendly competition? Gone, replaced by “beat up the kids” missions.
I have not yet played Amped on the 360, but it is on my Gamefly list.
1080 and the SSX series are fantastic. I could care less about snowboarding IRL, but for some reason every snowboarding game I’ve played has absorbed me.
I haven’t played SSX On Tour or any Amped games. Of the 3 SSXes I have played, I actually like the original the best. The graphics, number of tricks, and general gameplay improved with the sequels, but the unique personality of the original eroded away. For SSX Tricky they got celebrity voice actors for several returning characters, which I never got used to. For SSX 3, they also replaced the awesome smack-talking DJ Rahzel* with the incredibly bland and boring DJ Atomica**, replaced even more character voice actors, made the characters talk less in general, changed the body shape and face of several characters, and made everyone’s stats identical. And to top it all off, they took away the ridiculously cool Pipe Dream course with its crazy rails and absurd air possibilities, and the stupidly radical Tokyo Megaplex human pinball course, complete with bumpers, flippers, and giant air blowers.
*sample expressions: Oooh, I didn’t know backs could bend that way! Gravity wins! I’d cut that out of the replay. The captain of crunch!
**sample expressions: This is DJ Atomica, bringing you _____ on SSX Radio. I’m looking at the weather report for the mountain, and it looks like it’s gonna be… wait for it… perfect conditions.
I have gotten gold on all of the challenges on Amped 3, as well as impressed the crowd on each mountain. If you look at my gamertag, TommyTutone, you will see I have 1000 achievement points for the game.
That said, I obviously loved it. The story was short, but very entertaining, and there was plenty of replay value in going back to ‘complete’ the game. Most of the challenges are fun, but the kitty cleanup and magic rings will take almost rote memorization and lots of practice and frustration to nail, but it is satisfying to be able to do so.
As much as I enjoyed the other Amped games, the snowboarding in Amped 3 is a little more user friendly and that’s part of what kept me trying to finish it. The only thing lacking (and this is a big thing) is multiplayer where you can just shred down a mountain together and compare scores.
It’s tricky to rock a rhyme
To rock a rhyme that’s right on time
It’s tricky.
Get with it granddad.
As for SSX, I am not a gamer, I find games generally to be frustrating or boring. I don’t own a console and don’t really play anything on the computer. But I absolutely love SSX. I borrowed a PSII off my friend and couldn’t get enough. I could play it all day and all night without eating.
Alright! I am glad that you enjoyed it. How long did it take you to finish? I have to admit that I secretly like frustrating because it keeps me playing until I get it done LOL. Just the competitive side of me talking…
Going straight through the story, probably 6 hours tops, and the hardest part of that was the hang gliding missions they stuck in out of left field. Going back and completing all the missions in gold made it about 25 hours of gameplay for me total. As mentioned before, I had my doubts I could do it, especially with the Kitty Cleanup and Magic Ring missions, but through practice, you should be able to nail them. As an aside, I did these for the most part without having to do the connecting manuals, which I’ve always been lousy at.
That was my first ‘zen’ game…you know, when you can totally zone out, concentrate on something else, and your subconscious takes over, and before you know it you’re through the course with a new record? Yeah. I love me some 1080.
Wow 6 hours is pretty impressive. I have a feeling it is going to take me alittle longer LOL but definitely worth it.
Have you heard anything about the Amped 3 snowboard sweepstakes? My friend was telling me about it and said that you could win an xbox360, the game, and a trip to go snowboarding for 3. Sounds really cool to me Definitely might have to sign up for that one
