Snuff Pterry

I did a search but didn’t find anything, so just in case you’ve ben off planet for a while, Pterrys bringing a new book out in, I think, October or September.

Its about Vimes going on holiday and having some sort of multiple murder to sort out.
It includes Goblins.

Yee HAR !

Back to the good stuff.

Pterry at his worst is still excellent, but as much as I enjoy Tiffany Aching stories they’re not a patch on the events going on in Ankh Morpork.

I have a new spring in my step.

I actually think his YA books are better than his more “adult” book. But I admit, that last one, Nation, was not very good. Mind you, as you said- still better than most of everything esle, but still a disapointment.

And here I thought Nation was one of his best works ever. YM(obviously does)V

I thought Nation and Unseen Academicals both sucked.

But that is compared to things like Night Watch, which I’ll admit is a mighty high bar.

His most recent YA was a Tiffany Aching book - I Shall Wear Midnight. Nation came out two years earlier.

And put me down as someone who thought Nation was an amazing book - one of his best, easily.

I agree: Nation was transcendent. I love Night Watch but I not sure how well it stands as a literary work in its own right. I did not enjoy Unseen Academicalsas much as some other works, but I never enjoy the wizard stories as much as I like Vimes. And it’s not even “the guards” for me anymore. I just love Vimes so much these days I can’t stand it.

Amazon UK has the release date as Oct. 14th. That means I’ll get my copy on this side of the pond somewhere around Oct. 23rd or so. Perfect.

The thing about Terry Pratchett (and other really good authors) is that even when you think a specific book sucks, there’s always that one quote or character or funny scene that you find yourself rereading and quoting.

To be fair I’m not the target audience for the T.A. books, which is probably the reason I don’t enjoy them as much as the A.M. stories.

She , (and witches in general ) are a little too moral for my taste.

I prefer amoral characters, your Vetinaris, Moists and even Nobby.

I did read Nation but found it a bit anti climatic.

When I grow up I’m going to run away to Ankh Morpork, cos its where all the action is.

Plus I want to try one of C.M.O.T.D.s pies, though I’m pretty sure my local pub is one of his pie franchises.

I guess I’m in the minority who loved Unseen Academicals – he finally sorta-wrapped-up some of the dangling storylines without getting maudlin and actually did so while introducing new characters and settings and concepts without navel-gazing. I was pretty amazed. He’s clearly putting Discworld in a place where he can stop without leaving gaps, which is sad but always exceptionally cathartic as a longtime fan. The fact that he’s not being lazy while doing this really impresses me.

I think the Aching books were the best books he’s written, and they form an excellent, coherent narrative as well as a gateway into proper Discworld. And completely run through with the sort of powerful, meaningful advice about what it is to be a good person and do the right thing.

So…I’m certainly looking forward to it.

does not happen!

I have a question about the title: um, what does it mean? I get that pterry is 'netspeak for Terry Pratchett, but the thread title seems to be calling for a hit on the guy.:confused::confused:

The title of the new book is “Snuff.”

I agree. The thread title had me wondering bad things for a second.

Apparently Pterry said that Snuff has more then one meaning, and no I have no idea what meaning he was thinking about when he chose the title.

And TYPOINK I too really enjoyed U.A. as did at least one of my mates. (Most aren’t book readers, let alone Pterry fans, their loss)

Run into an Igor, have we?

I can think of only three – one involves murder, one involves candles, and one involves tobacco. And Vimes is a cigar/cigarette man.

There’s also the movies of people dying. Maybe a theatre troupe are killing extras?

I think his last three books Nation, I Shall Wear Midnight, and Unseen Academicals are amongst his best. I was expecting some sign of his unfortunate illness, but none was evident.

They have all been upto snuff.

Maybe it’s a story about a new drug, one of the social issues Pratchett has only briefly touched on with the trolls.

Me too.

The title led me to think the thread was about his documentary on assisted suicide.

Anyway, it’s too bad his new book is Snuff, because that means it isn’t Raising Taxes. Moist von Lipvig is easily one of my favourites.
