Because I’ve been noticing them starting to crop up. Then again, maybe it’s just confined to hockey players, because that’s where I’ve been seeing them.
I thought maybe Progressive Insurance’s new unnamed commercial character started a new trend.

It could be the leftovers from Movember. I don’t don’t think hockey players’ hair stylings (facial or otherwise) are all that indicative of mainstream fashion… Though, I do see quite a few hipsters sporting 'staches.
Yeah, there does seem to be kind of a trend toward bad mustaches that make guys like child molesters. I assume that most of them are supposed to be ironic, but the problem with a fashion choice that looks ironically bad is that it’s indistinguishable from one that looks bad for any other reason. Very few guys can make a standable mustache look good, and it’s not something that can be done in a half-assed way. Most guys just shouldn’t try.
It’s hipster fashion bleeding into mainstream.
I think if they tread carefully it can be accepted. Some people look okay with a moustache, usually if they’re older and bald, or effortlessly dashingly handsome. In all other cases, leave it alone. Beards are okay, but moustaches are dodgy territory.
My first thought when I read the thread title was “could be leftovers from Movember.” The guys at my part-time job all grew 'staches during November, had a 'stache contest at the end of the month as part of the fundraising, and a couple kept them. Thank og the ones who really weren’t pulling them off did shave, but I’m not much of a fan, anyway. Another couple of them had to take facebook polls before shaving theirs - as the replies were unanimous to please shave!
I hope not… because the next thing that will happen is that ambient music will change. And I really don’t want to go grocery shopping to ‘bow chikka chikka wow wow’…
Neither do I.
Unless I’m shopping for melons.
Or pizza.
Don’t think porn star; think handlebar.
With great mustache comes great responsibility.
They’re making an ironic comeback.
One of my supervisors at work has been alternating between the porn 'stashe, and growing out his muttonchops with it to turn it into a “Lemmy 'stashe”.
My theory on fashion trends is that the cycle starts with “in fashion”, moves to “out of fashion”, goes then to “ironically in fashion” and then finally returns to “in fashion” without the irony.
The irony is just a way for people to test the waters, free from perceived ridicule.
I think this is also tied to generation cycle time and memory. A generation and a half after the first popularity, it has ceased being laughably out-of-fashion and new people can experiment with it. The cycle is somewhat similar to the fashionability cycle of buildings, except that takes place on a slightly-longer timescale related to maintenance needs and the wearing out of finishes. A building is most vulnerable to being redeveloped when it’s around forty years old.
Don’t worry, in stache world nobody goes shopping. All purchases are delivered… with special service.
Yeah I’ve noticed moustaches in general and showy ones in particular to be more common in recent years than in the say 90s/early 00s. I think Movember both came from this general trend and has helped popularise it, but that’s supposition on my part.
I haven’t noticed a trend. But this isn’t exactly cutting-edge fashion territory around here.
Has anyone noticed that mostashces in general are becoming hot? It’s like They’re everywhere in those trendy hipster stores.
That’s why they can’t remake Magnum P.I… You don’t find dudes sporting an epic mustache like Selleck’s just anywhere.
I think we have a confusion of terms here.
The guy in the OP has what I would consider a real mustache, and could also be called a ‘porno stache.’ And, as a 100% straight guy, I’m actually ok with saying it looks good on him…obviously, that’s helped with the clothing and the car…he’s got that whole retro 70’s look down.
However, this is not the same thing as a ‘pedo/pedophile stache.’ That is a thinner, more wispy style, like so:

Or maybe even a John Waters-style mustache.
And I disagree that mustaches look good on older, larger, balder men. Just makes them all look like a small-town, southern sheriff.
That being said, they just look bad on most men anyway, young, old, skinny, fat, etc…Not everyone can be a Burt Reynolds, Tom Selleck, or…umm…the Progressive Guy.
