I actually just came back to say that perhaps a categorical sorting system wouldn’t work as well as a sliding scale. My point still stands; it’s possible to understand (but not condone) actions at one side of the scale, but not the other.
These are just the people who are extremely fucked up due to taking normal human emotions to an extreme. I am sure that there are rapes caused by people who are even MORE fucked up, so fucked up that I can’t even make guesses about their behavior.
Prostitutes cost money; there’s no reason to factor “power” into it any more that pretending that a mugging is about power. And most rape victims know their attacker, so one obvious reason to pick rape over a prostitute is convenience; in the mind of a rapist why go looking for a woman when one is right there?
That makes sense. Maybe the equation is Lust for Sex + Small Power Lust = Rape, and also Lust for Sex + Disregard for Others = Rape
It sure doesn’t, and that is much of the reason for my saying I don’t “get” it. And, I might add, I went on to say that even if rape is not based on sexual attraction, I still don’t see the appeal. Not in sexual attraction, not in domination, not in sexual sadism - I don’t see why it would occur to anyone to rape a mentally disabled woman.
Suppose you are correct, and rape is never about sexual attraction at all. Even so, I don’t see why one would want to do it.

Because they feel the need to humiliate and harm someone – and sex is a very personal thing. So a rapist turns around and uses sex as a weapon to hurt that person. It makes them FEEL powerful, because they can dominate and humiliate someone. (And you have someone who gets off on that. Hell, some people get off on all sorts of things – don’t some pyros get off on starting fires? I mean seriously, as in get an erection from doing so?)
As for their choice of victim – well, in this case, the woman can’t fight back. Why do some rapists use roofies?

I don’t support the death penalty, but I could get on board with castration for sexual crimes. First offense, chemical castration. Any further offense, it gets whacked off. Part of me honestly believes that this is the one currency that speaks to sexual offenders.
Our prisons cannot hold them forever, we know no way to fix them, so let’s just protect the innocent and neuter them. It’s got to be cheaper than housing them, and they won’t be able to reoffend.
