I was wondering if any SDopers are fans of the band, “Boston”? If so, can you tell me if this CD is up to par with the past three CDs (Boston, Don’t Look Back, and Third Stage) Is it a “must-have”, for my “Boston” collection? - Jinx
I’m a fan of Boston, but haven’t heard the new one. They did make an album without Brad Delp in the lead vocal position.
AVOID this like a Wham! reunion.
This is a case of a band not beind a band without certain members. In the case of Boston, without Tom Scholz AND Brad Delp, it ain’t Boston.
Mr. Blue Sky (aside: does your name come from the ELO song of the same title???), are you refering to the band, RTZ, which was formed by some Boston members, IIRC, in the early 1990’s? I liked one song they’d play on the radio from this album…I’ll see if I have the song title written down somewhere…will come back to this!
FYI: RTZ stood for “Return to Zero”

Was it just the 3rd album where the source tape was damaged? IIRC, it was completed about a decade prior to its release, but it was held in storage due to custody battles with the band’s label and/or manager, IIRC.
TTFN!

I have a friend who is a huge Boston fan. He has a copy of the original demo tape of Boston’s first LP (which was recorded in Sholz’ basement studio). Epic records insisted the album be re-recorded in a “real” studio. The two are virtually indistinguishable.
BTW, my username IS derived from the ELO classic!
I am a fan, and I purchased their new release, Corporate America , last month. Tom Scholz is still the mastermind of the band. Brad Delp sings lead on three songs. One of these, I Had a Good Time , sounds pretty close to the “classic” Boston sound. The leads on the other songs are done by Fran Cosmo (the lead singer on their 4th release, Walk On ) and a new band member, bassist Kimberly Dahme (sp?).
Interestingly, Scholz has decided to try and target the college audience with an alternative rock sound. Anthony Cosmo, the son of lead singer Fran, contributed three songs which often sound like Oasis or Goo Goo Dolls meet Boston - that doesn’t sound very appealing, but I liked the result. Many longtime fans were appalled, however - try visiting this Boston message board

I think if you listen to the CD with an open mind, and you if like a broad variety of classic and current rock music, you may like it. If all you are looking for is the “classic” Boston sound, don’t bother.
What exactly have you been up to Jinx? Have you been going through my 1980s record collection ??
Here’s someone who spent the decade with two spaceships on their wall, ELO’s and Boston’s. Kind of sad when you think of it now.
I was very disappointed with “Third Stage”. Well, you wait so long for something your expectation levels are that bit higher.
