So Cal Dopers..Elevation Question

Having just had a retina re-attached, I have to remain at roughly seal level, plus or minus 1,000 feet. I want to drive to Simi Valley from San Diego this week. I know I’m OK through LA, but what about north of LA on the 405? Unless I’m mistaken, there’s a grade around Mulholland Drive. Anyone know if this grade exceeds 1,000 feet?

Anyone know of a website that provides elevation along major roads?

Thanks.

According to Wikipedia, the Sepulveda Pass is just a hair over 1000 ft.

However, the drop when you’re headed north into the valley is steep. I’ve actually had my ears pop on the descent.

A better route into the Valley might be the 101 which runs through Cahuenga Pass. The max elevation is only 745 ft. and the grades are less extreme.

Or the 405 to the 110 to the 5 to the 118.

Takes you out of your way a bit, but it’s the flattest route by far. Check it out on google terrain & bing’s bird’s eye view.

Sorry. Misread the map. The surrounding hills are 1200 to 1600 feet. The 118 itself appears to be 1000 ft or so.

You can look at topo maps online by visiting mapper.acme.com.

I used to drive from San Diego to Los Angeles with some frequency, and usually just came up Pacific Coast Highway. It takes a while, but can be an interesting drive, and I don’t recall much change in elevation along the way; maybe a bit near Laguna Beach area. If you’re not in a big hurry that might work for you.

Seconding the 101. That was my first thought for flat route to the valley.

How important is this particular trip, at this particular time? Because I would think you have more than the elevation to worry about. And it seems to me that the rate of change would be as important as the height. Please check with your doctor if you haven’t already.

IANAD but that doesn’t sound like a very wise activity if you’ve just had your retina re-attached.
